Osu is where Accra goes out. Cantonments Road between Lokko Road and Danquah Circle, known to everyone as Oxford Street, is by Time Out's reckoning the busiest street in the city, and many of its shops and restaurants sit on the quieter numbered lanes off it.1 Osu was mainly residential until the 1990s and early 2000s, when the street turned into a commercial and nightlife strip.2

Coffee splits along the same lines. Vida e Caffè and Second Cup, at 10 Oxford Street, face the main road, and Breakfast to Breakfast is just off it on Dr. Esther Ocloo Street. Kukun on Koi Street and Jamestown Coffee Company lie farther east, while Good Vibes Cafe and Urbanbox Café complete the independents.

Local tip: For a day on a laptop, Kukun's café on Koi Street is open to the public from 07:00, and desks upstairs can be rented by the day.5

Getting to Osu and along Oxford Street

Taxis and tro tros (shared minibuses) work the Oxford Street corridor, linking Osu with Cantonments, Labone and Circle; expect jams at night and on weekends.2 Hawkers are most persistent at the northern end, selling wristbands and football shirts, and Time Out warns of a scam built around embroidered wristbands.1

The neighborhood's limits are easy to keep in mind: the Gulf of Guinea to the south, Independence Avenue to the west and Ring Road to the north, with Labone on its far side.3 Danquah Circle, the roundabout at the top of Oxford Street, is named after J.B. Danquah, one of Ghana's founding fathers.1

Osu Castle and the Danish coast

Osu's oldest landmark stands on the shore. Denmark–Norway built a substantial fort here in the 1660s, named it Christiansborg after King Christian V and ran the Danish Gold Coast from it, holding enslaved people and shipping them overseas.4 From 1902 the castle was the seat of government of the Gold Coast, and in 1979 UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List together with Ghana's other castles and forts.4 The seat of government has since moved to Jubilee House.4

Kukun: coffee, desks and a garden

Kukun, at 14 Koi Street, opens every day from 07:00 to 22:00, an hour past closing time at Vida e Caffè on Oxford Street, which keeps 06:00 to 21:00. The ground floor is a café and bar open to the public, the upper floors hold offices and flexible workspaces rented by the day, week or month, and a large garden runs alongside.5

The menu covers coffee, hot chocolate, tea, juices, mocktails and milkshakes, with a build-your-own breakfast, and the Thursday Lates evenings are its best-known event.6

A roaster in a warehouse

Jamestown Coffee Company is a roaster first. Its founder, Kwasi Osei-Kusi, began studying robusta in 2015, and the company roasted in an abandoned Osu warehouse before turning it into a café; a second café followed in East Legon.7

The Infatuation describes high ceilings, a shaded outdoor area and flat whites made with cow's milk or a plant-based alternative, plus breakfast and an early dinner menu with grilled steak.8 Its two condensed-milk signatures are named after other parts of Accra, Kaneshie and Labadi.7
