Kypseli (Κυψέλη) fills much of the 6th municipal district north of the center, bounded by Patision Street to the west, Tourkovounia hill to the east and Pedion tou Areos park to the south; about 50,000 people lived here in 2001.1 It was estates and country houses until the engineer Athanasios Georgiadis laid out the district in 1908, and apartment blocks followed from the 1930s, some in Bauhaus and Art Deco styles.1

Patision and Fokionos Negri have the most cafés, with Evelpidon, Acharnon and Ioannou Drosopoulou behind them, and the range runs from 24-hour counters to a roaster’s espresso bar. Time Out calls Kypseli the city’s only truly multicultural neighborhood, home to African and Middle Eastern communities who settled here over the past two decades.2

Local tip: For a quiet table on Fokionos Negri, go in the morning: Select Cafe at no. 26 opens at 07:00, and the market’s free exhibition opens at 09:00 from Monday to Saturday.4

Getting to Kypseli

Kypseli has no metro yet. Line 4, under construction since 2021, will have a Kypseli station, with service now expected around 2032.3 Until then, buses 2, 4, 5 and 11 run from Syntagma Square to Fokionos Negri, and a taxi from the center takes about 15 to 20 minutes.2 Pedion tou Areos park separates Kypseli from Exarchia to the south.2

Fokionos Negri and the 1937 market

Fokionos Negri, the district’s old shopping street, is now pedestrianized, with cafés and a strip of park down its length.1 Halfway along, the Δημοτική Αγορά Κυψέλης (Dimotikí Agorá Kypsélis, municipal market) opened in 1937 to ease the load on the central Varvakeios market. It stopped trading in 2003, became a protected monument in 2005 and reopened under Technopolis of the City of Athens in July 2023.4

The building, bounded by Fokionos Negri, Sporadon, Syrou and Zakynthou, now holds nine shops and workshops, two creative labs and a free exhibition on the market and the neighborhood. The exhibition opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–20:00, and on Sundays 11:00–18:00 when an event is on.4

Coffee on the pedestrian street

Cafés stand door to door along the pedestrian stretch. Select Cafe at no. 26 opens at 07:00 and closes at 14:00, while Foka+Negra and Soulatso, at nos. 32 and 34, stay open until 03:00 every night. The Underdog, a Thiseio roaster, opened its first partner espresso bar at Fokionos Negri 49.56

Around the market the cafés get smaller. Kick on Sporadon pours espresso, filter and freddo cappuccino from rotating guest roasters such as Bonanza of Berlin and HandPickers of Athens, with pastries from its sister bakery, Flake.7 Williwaw, a small, minimal café at Kerkyras 69, keeps to espresso, cappuccino and iced drinks.6

Early and late on Patision

Patision Street, Kypseli’s western edge, has more cafés than any other street in the district, and some never close: Kiosky’s at Patision 131 and Yes at Patision 107 are open 24 hours. On Acharnon, Los Primos at no. 198 opens at 06:00 from Monday to Saturday, and Coffee Orange, at 3is Septemvriou 85, runs 05:00–23:00 daily.

Evenings move to the squares. Time Out recommends Village, a café by day and a bar in the evening, for its outdoor tables on Platia Agiou Georgiou, and Orfeas, near the market, where local artists often perform until it closes at 02:00.2
