Pangrati (Παγκράτι) takes its name from an ancient sanctuary of Herakles Pankrates, the all-powerful. It runs from Vasilissis Sofias and Vasileos Konstantinou avenues east toward Hymettus and takes in the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896, and the First Cemetery of Athens.1 About 35,000 people live here.1
In 2022 Time Out placed it 39th on its list of the world’s 51 coolest neighborhoods, describing a district long overlooked by tourists that had become a draw for creative people, with bars and artisanal restaurants.2 Formionos and Ymittou have the most cafés, with Eratosthenous next.
Local tip: Ask what filter coffee is on at Foyer Espresso Bar on Vryaxidos, which often stocks rare varieties from foreign roasters; it opens at 07:00 on weekdays.3

Getting to Pangrati
Evangelismos station on Line 3 is the nearest metro, and trolleybuses 2, 4 and 11 cross the district. Plateia Plastira is a stop on all three trolleybus networks as well as local bus routes.1 The National Garden is a few minutes’ walk from the western edge, and a Pangrati station on Imittou Street has been suggested for a later section of Line 4.1
Squares and the Goulandris museum
Squares organize the neighborhood. Plateia Varnava, behind the Kallimarmaro, as the marble Panathenaic Stadium is known, has restaurants and tavernas around it, and Agios Spyridon square holds the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art.1 Time Out sent readers to the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation for its Picasso, Miró and Van Gogh, and to Timotheou Street for drinks.2
The museum’s café-restaurant is at Eratosthenous 13, and on Timotheou, Ohana bar & coffee and Το Κουνούπι (To Kounoúpi, the mosquito) share no. 7. On the squares themselves, Βαρνάβα Cafe and t & toggs face Plateia Varnava, and Posto is on Plateia Plastira.
The district’s edge has moved over time: its eastern limit was once the slopes of Hymettus, pushed outward between the wars, and in the 2010s it became a hipster destination as house prices rose.1
Formionos Street
Formionos has one of the district’s longest runs of cafés: Books & Beans at no. 2A, VA John’s at no. 11, People’s at no. 43 and Τσέρι at no. 76, with Honest Coffee Developers, which has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables, along the same street. Το καφενεδάκι, a small kafeneío, is at Formionos 92.
Roasters and espresso bars
Foyer Espresso Bar, at Vryaxidos 2, is known for filter coffee and works with leading foreign roasters, often bringing in rare varieties; it opens 07:00–19:00 on weekdays and 08:00–18:00 at weekends.3 Motiv, which roasts all of its own coffee, has a second café at Formionos 42–44.4
Kross Coffee Roasters was founded in Chania, Crete, in 2013 by the brothers Sotos and Stavros Michael, and its Pangrati café opens 08:00–17:00 daily.5 KUDU Coffee Shop, on Plateia Pangratiou, belongs to Kudu Coffee Roasters of Neo Psychiko, which runs cupping and brewing classes.6
Hours, from 05:00 to 02:30
