Koukaki (Κουκάκι) lies south of the Acropolis, with Makrygianni and Plaka to the north, Filopappou and Thiseio to the west and Neos Kosmos across Andrea Syngrou Avenue to the east; Veikou and Dimitrakopoulou are its two through streets.1 The Acropolis Museum, opened in June 2009 on the site of the old Makrygianni gendarmerie barracks, stands at its northern edge.2

Once a dense working-class district, Koukaki was voted one of the world’s coolest neighborhoods by Airbnb users in 2015, and short-term rentals spread from there.3 Georgiou Olympiou has more cafés than any other street here, followed by Veikou and Dimitrakopoulou, and outdoor tables gather on its two pedestrian streets.

Local tip: Friday is market day in Koukaki; pair the vegetable stalls with a table on Georgiou Olympiou, where Άνω Τελεία opens at 09:00.1
