Campo di Marte is one of Florence's five quartieri, the residential belt northeast of the old walls.1 It takes in Piazza della Libertà, the market square of Le Cure, the shopping street of Via Gioberti and the stadium, with Viale dei Mille running between them.

The cafés here serve the neighborhood rather than the sights, and many have their own pastry counters. Via Gioberti alone has Caffè Gioberti, Caffè Il Giobertino, Caffetteria Il Bigallo, Caffetteria Piansa, Bar Drogheria Magnelli and Serafini, and Piazza delle Cure has Caffè Le Cure, Caffe Calandrino and Gelateria Cavini.

Local tip: Get to Caffè Lietta on Piazza della Libertà before late morning if you want a budino di riso; it often sells out.3

Caffè Lietta, under the porticoes at numbers 6–8, is known for its budino di riso, which often sells out by late morning, and for the Pirulo, a tall shortcrust pudding.3 Caffè Libertà, at number 27r, has tables outside. Viale dei Mille and Badiani

Idilio Badiani founded his gelateria on Viale dei Mille in 1932; Orazio Pomposi took it over in 1993, and its best-known flavor, Buontalenti, named for the Renaissance architect, uses only cream, milk, sugar and eggs.5 On the same avenue, Caffè Firenze opens Monday to Saturday 07:00–19:30, and La Boutique del Sud stays open until 22:30. Badiani now counts 12 shops in all, but the Viale dei Mille counter is the original.5

Match days at the Franchi

The Stadio Artemio Franchi, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, opened in September 1931 as the Stadio Giovanni Berta, and Fiorentina have played there ever since; its 70-meter concrete Tower of Marathon carries the flagstaff.6 Rebuilding has cut its capacity from about 43,147 seats to about 24,786, with the Fiesole end closed; the first lot of work is due by 30 April 2027.7

Bar Caffé Teatro on Via Zanobi Portigiani and Jazz Bistrot, open daily 07:00–22:30, are close to the ground.
