Florence's grand cafés owe a good deal to its six years as a capital. The city replaced Turin as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1865 and handed the role to Rome in 1871.1 Enrico Rivoire, a Turin-born chocolatier who supplied the royal family, followed the court south and opened his shop a few steps from Palazzo Vecchio in 1872; the firm says its Florence story began with a cup of hot chocolate.2

The city also leads the country in specialty coffee: Gambero Rosso International wrote in February 2024 that Florence had no competition in Italy for the number and variety of its specialty cafés.3 One of the first was Ditta Artigianale, opened on Via dei Neri in 2013 by Francesco Sanapo, a three-time Italian barista champion.4 By August 2024 the company had its original bar plus four more Florence addresses and was preparing a first shop in Milan.5

An espresso at the counter is not expensive. In August 2024 Fipe Confcommercio, the bar owners' federation, put Florence's average at €1.20–1.30, between Rome and the €1.50 of Bologna and Milan.6 A cappuccino averaged €1.41, one of the lowest figures among the big cities in an Assoutenti survey published the same summer.7

How coffee works in Florence

In the busy bars of the center, you pay first. Order at the cassa (till), take the scontrino (receipt) to the counter and repeat the order to the barista; tipping is optional, and a few cents left on the counter is plenty.8 A plain caffè is an espresso, and caffè latte, not latte, gets you milk in it.8

The counter and the table have separate prices. At I Dolci di Patrizio Cosi, a pastry bar in the center, a coffee cost €1.30 at the counter and €2.40 at a table in August 2025, and a cappuccino went from €1.70 to €3; the bar also added €1 per seated customer.9 Prices have to be on display behind the counter: in 2022 municipal police fined Ditta Artigianale €1,000 after a customer queried a €2 decaf whose price was shown only on a QR-code menu.10

Breakfast is a cappuccino with a pastry, and the local one is the budino di riso: a small shortcrust case filled with rice cooked in milk and mixed with pastry cream, ordered as a lighter alternative to the cornetto.11 At Carnival the counters fill with schiacciata alla fiorentina, a soft orange-scented sponge no more than 3 cm high, dusted with powdered sugar and cocoa.12

For laptop work, the bookshop cafés are the easiest choice. In December 2025 a Romeing guide for remote workers pointed to La Cité on Borgo San Frediano, where Wi-Fi and outlets reach most tables, and to the large tables of RED Feltrinelli on Piazza della Repubblica.13

FAQ

Cafés in Florence: common questions

How much does an espresso cost in Florence?

About €1.20 to €1.30 at the counter on average in 2024, according to the bar owners' federation Fipe Confcommercio, and a cappuccino averaged €1.41. At a table it costs more: one pastry bar in the center charged €1.30 at the counter and €2.40 at a table in 2025. Rivoire on Piazza della Signoria sells residents a €1 espresso.

Which neighborhood of Florence has the most cafés?

Rifredi & Novoli and Campo di Marte have the most cafés, followed by Duomo & Centro Storico. Around the Duomo, the old cafés face Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza della Signoria. Campo di Marte's bars line Via Gioberti, Viale dei Mille and Piazza delle Cure, and the Oltrarno has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, from Borgo San Frediano to Via Pisana.

Do you pay before ordering coffee at a bar in Florence?

In the busy bars of the center, yes. You order and pay at the cassa (till), then take the scontrino (receipt) to the counter. Prices must be displayed behind the counter, and a table costs more than standing. Tipping is optional; a few cents left on the counter is enough.

What is a budino di riso in Florence?

A small breakfast pastry: a shortcrust case filled with rice cooked in milk and mixed with pastry cream. In Florence it is often ordered with a cappuccino as a lighter alternative to the cornetto. At Carnival, the counters add schiacciata alla fiorentina, a soft orange-scented sponge dusted with sugar and cocoa.

When did specialty coffee start in Florence?

Francesco Sanapo, a three-time Italian barista champion, opened Ditta Artigianale on Via dei Neri in 2013. By 2024 it had five Florence addresses and was preparing a shop in Milan, and Gambero Rosso International wrote that year that no Italian city could match Florence for specialty cafés.
