A café's outdoor tables are its dehors, set on public land under a city concession. In November 2025 Mayor Sara Funaro's administration and the Florence heritage authority agreed a protocol that bans them outright on 50 streets of the UNESCO area, among them Piazzale degli Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio, and tightens the rules on 73 more.1

The center still has the most terraces. Piazza della Signoria, Piazza della Repubblica and the Duomo square account for many of them, from Rivoire and Caffè Perseo to Gilli and L'opera, and Rifredi, north of the station, comes next, ahead of Campo di Marte and the Oltrarno.

Local tip: Check the price list by the door before you sit: in the center a table can cost twice the counter price, and some bars add a seat charge on top.3

Where these cafés are: Duomo & Centro Storico (10), Rifredi & Novoli (8), Campo di Marte (7), Oltrarno (6), San Lorenzo & San Marco (3), Santa Croce (2), Gavinana (2), Santa Maria Novella (2), Sant'Ambrogio (1).

What the new dehors rules change

On the 73 restricted streets, a bar must choose one of five approved designs, from bare tables and chairs to a structure closed on every side; plastic sheeting and advertising unrelated to the business are banned.1 The four big squares, Signoria, Repubblica, Santa Maria Novella and Pitti, were left for a separate decision.1

Each application now needs site surveys, technical checks and an assessment of how the furniture fits the street. In July 2026 the city refused the surveyors' request to push the 31 August filing deadline back, though existing concessions stay valid until a new permit is granted or refused.2

What a table costs

Sitting down is charged for. At I Dolci di Patrizio Cosi, a historic pastry bar in the center, the owner Riccardo Camporesi added €1 per seated customer in 2025, on top of table prices of €2.40 for a coffee and €3 for a cappuccino; customers still carry their own cups back to the counter.3 He said tables were often taken for 45 minutes at a time.3

Terraces on the big squares

Gilli puts out a summer dehor facing Piazza della Repubblica, and Paszkowski serves gelato on its terrace there in the warm months.4 On the Signoria, Rivoire and Caffè Perseo face the Palazzo Vecchio; Caffè Scudieri has tables by the Baptistery, and Caffè Le Logge on Via Porta Rossa and Rudi's Bistro' on Via Vacchereccia have a few on the side streets.

Across the river, Caffè Ricchi and Cabiria share Piazza Santo Spirito, Bar Pitti looks onto the palace from Piazza di Pitti 1, and Bar d'Angolo sits on Piazza della Calza by Porta Romana. Il Bar del Forte, on Via di San Leonardo, has tables by the Forte Belvedere.

Tables beyond the walls

In Rifredi, Pasticceria Crociani and Caffè Pasticceria Serafini both have tables on Piazza Dalmazia; Crociani opens daily 07:00–22:00. Bar Rullo on Via Romagnosi and Uva bar on Piazza Giovanni Spadolini also sit outside.

In Campo di Marte, Caffè Le Cure and Gelateria Cavini di Fedi share Piazza delle Cure, and Caffè Libertà faces Piazza della Libertà. South of the river in Gavinana, Caffè Bargioni on Via di Ricorboli and Marcello...La Pasticceria on Viale Europa have outdoor seats.

FAQ

Outdoor seating in Florence: questions

Where are outdoor tables banned in Florence's historic center?

Under the protocol agreed in November 2025 between the city and its heritage authority, outdoor tables are to be banned on 50 streets of the UNESCO area, including Piazzale degli Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio. On 73 other streets bars must use one of five approved designs, and plastic sheeting is not allowed.

How much more does it cost to sit at an outdoor café table in Florence?

It depends on the bar's price list. At one historic pastry bar in the center in 2025, a coffee cost €2.40 at a table and a cappuccino €3, and the owner added a €1 charge per seated customer. Customers there still return their cups to the counter.

Which Florence squares have café terraces?

Piazza della Signoria, with Rivoire and Caffè Perseo; Piazza della Repubblica, where Gilli and Paszkowski set out tables in summer; the Duomo square; and Piazza Santo Spirito, with Caffè Ricchi and Cabiria. Beyond the walls, Piazza Dalmazia in Rifredi and Piazza delle Cure in Campo di Marte have terraces too.
