A Florentine breakfast is built on butter, eggs and milk, so vegan options take some looking for. Plant milks and vegan cakes turn up mainly at the specialty and brunch cafés, from Borgo la Croce to Via Ghibellina.

The Oltrarno has the most cafés with vegan options, ahead of the Duomo area and Rifredi. Popcafé on Piazza Santo Spirito, Caffè Pontevecchio by the bridge and Bar Pitti on Piazza di Pitti are south of the river; north of it, Amblé and Caffè Scudieri are in the center.

Local tip: Ask for latte d'avena (oat milk), latte di soia or latte di mandorla when you order a cappuccino; Gualtieri on Via Senese stocks all three.4

Where these cafés are: Oltrarno (4), Duomo & Centro Storico (2), Santa Croce (2), San Lorenzo & San Marco (2), Rifredi & Novoli (2), Santa Maria Novella (1), Campo di Marte (1).
