The Centro Storico is the bend of the Tiber west of Via del Corso: the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori and the old Ghetto, down to Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline. Bar Campidoglio, Caffé Rudy and Caffetteria Italia al Vittoriano share Piazza d'Aracoeli at the foot of the Capitoline steps, and Café Domiziano and Tre Scalini are on Piazza Navona itself.

It is the most famous square mile in Rome for coffee. Two roasters work either side of the Pantheon, Sant'Eustachio on its own piazza and Tazza d'Oro on Via degli Orfani, and the lanes west of Navona keep bars open past midnight. Pastry counters such as Roscioli's, by Via dei Giubbonari, and Pasticceria Cinque Lune, on Corso del Rinascimento, fill the morning.

Local tip: At Sant'Eustachio, order it amaro if you want no sugar; otherwise the coffee comes very sweet.8

Sant'Eustachio and Tazza d'Oro, either side of the Pantheon

Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè, at Piazza di Sant'Eustachio 82, opened in 1938 and still roasts with an old wood-fired roaster; a shop called Caffè e Latte stood on the site in 1800, and the Ricci brothers have owned it since 1999.1 It opens daily at 07:30 and serves past 01:00, until 02:00 on Saturdays. The Emporio Sant'Eustachio, at Via della Maddalena 36, keeps the same 07:30 start.

Tazza d'Oro began in 1944 as a roastery, and in 1946 it opened a bar so customers could taste the blends before buying beans.2 It is known for its coffee granitas. The bar is open Monday to Saturday 07:00–20:00 and Sunday 10:30–19:15.

Roscioli, Giolitti and the pastry counters

Roscioli Caffè e Pasticceria opened in January 2016 in the former Pasticceria Bernasconi, at Piazza Benedetto Cairoli 16 on the corner of Via dei Giubbonari.3 Its maritozzi are yeasted buns filled with whipped cream, and in 2016 Gourmet Traveller called its pour-over the first serious attempt at the method in Rome.3

Giolitti started in 1890 as a dairy on the Salita del Grillo, selling milk from the family's own cows, and in 1930 Nazzareno Giolitti opened the shop on Via degli Uffici del Vicario.4 It is open every day 07:00–01:30. Pasticceria Cinque Lune, at Corso del Rinascimento 89 behind Piazza Navona, opens Tuesday to Sunday 07:00–21:30.

Late bars around Navona and Campo de' Fiori

The lanes west of Navona keep the longest hours. L'Emporio alla Pace, at Via della Pace 28, is open daily 06:00–02:00, and Bar l'Orologio, at Via del Governo Vecchio 23, runs Monday to Saturday 06:00–22:00. On the same street, Antico Caffè della Pace reopened in September 2024 after eight years shut, now serving full meals as well as coffee.5

Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, the avenue that cuts through the district, has more cafés than any other street here; Gran Caffè Vittoriano, at number 28, is open daily 07:00–23:00. For specialty coffee, Barnum on Via del Pellegrino charged €2.20–3.50 for espresso, AeroPress and V60 in October 2025, and opens daily 08:00–15:30.6 Near the Portico d'Ottavia in the old Ghetto, Caffè del Portico is at Via del Portico d'Ottavia 10.

The Pantheon ticket and getting around

Entry to the Pantheon costs €7 since 1 July 2026, up from €5; visitors aged 18 to 25 still pay €2.7 Le Tartarughe, on Piazza Mattei by the Turtle Fountain, stays open daily 07:30–00:00, and Santeo on Via di San Teodoro opens at 07:00.

Around Campo de' Fiori, Cafe Flor and Da Gastone a Kampo face the square, and Via dei Banchi Vecchi, toward the river, is lined with small bars, among them Caffe ai Banchi Vecchi at number 6 and Orange Café at 114. The Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori are a few minutes' walk apart.
