Trastevere takes its name from the Latin trans Tiberim, beyond the Tiber, and is Rione XIII, on the west bank between the river and the Gianicolo hill.1 Its oldest landmark, Santa Maria in Trastevere, grew from a house-church founded around 220 and is one of the oldest churches in Rome; Pietro Cavallini's mosaics of the Life of the Virgin date from 1291, and the octagonal fountain in front already appears on a map of 1472.2

Coffee here means small neighborhood bars more than grand cafés. Bar San Calisto, on its piazza since 1969, is known for coffee under €1, and it reopened after a refurbishment in February 2026.3 Its furnishings date from the 1970s, and it has been open for over half a century.4

Local tip: Be on the Gianicolo terrace a few minutes before 12:00 to hear the noon cannon, then walk down to Bar Gianicolo on Piazzale Aurelio.7

San Cosimato and the streets around it

Piazza di San Cosimato has a food market every morning except Sunday.6 Bar Il Siciliano and Capriotti face the square. On Via Natale Del Grande, just off it, San Cosimato Caffè at number 31 has tables inside and out, and Caffetteria Berti at 46–48 sets tables on the street. Chakra Cafè, on Piazza di Santa Rufina, opens at 16:00 and also stays open until 02:00, every day except Tuesday. East of Viale di Trastevere, Comparone is on Piazza in Piscinula and Terra Satis at Via dei Vascellari 21.

The Gianicolo cannon and the Festa de' Noantri

A cannon below the Garibaldi monument on the Gianicolo fires at exactly noon every day, a custom Pius IX began on 1 December 1847 to keep the city's church bells in time; it has fired from the hill since 24 January 1904.7 Bar Gianicolo, at Piazzale Aurelio 5, opens Tuesday to Sunday 06:00–00:00.

In July Trastevere holds the Festa de' Noantri, the feast of "us others", meaning the people of Trastevere, ending with a river procession of the Madonna Fiumarola; in 2026 it ran from 13 to 27 July, with free evenings on a stage in Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere.8
