This is the Rome of the Grand Tour: the three streets fanning south from Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti, the Trevi Fountain, and Barberini and Via Veneto to the east. The Steps were built in 1723–1725, and since July 2019 city rules have allowed €250 fines for sitting on them.1
The cafés here trade on two centuries of visitors. Babington's tea rooms, at the foot of the Steps, were founded in 1893 by Isabel Cargill and Anna Maria Babington, and at Piazza del Popolo the Rosati brothers bought a latteria (dairy shop) in 1922, the start of Caffè Rosati.2
Local tip: Come to the Trevi Fountain after 22:00: the ticket desk closes and anyone can walk up to the basin for free.7

Antico Caffè Greco, closed since October 2025
Antico Caffè Greco, at Via dei Condotti 86, opened in 1760 and counted Baudelaire, Antonio Canova, James Joyce and Fellini among its customers.3 Police sealed it on 8 October 2025 and handed the keys back to the owner of the building, the Israelite Hospital, after the Court of Cassation upheld the end of the lease.3
In October 2026 it was still closed, with no solution in sight; Roma Capitale had extended its trading licence by 180 days.4 On the parallel streets, Cafe Romano is at Via Borgognona 4M and Dobar at Via delle Carrozze 61.
Piazza del Popolo and Via del Babuino
Canova (Piazza del Popolo 18) and Rosati (number 5A) sit at the south end of the square, where Via del Babuino, Via del Corso and Via di Ripetta begin. In the 1960s Rosati was where the painters of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo met, among them Franco Angeli, Tano Festa and Mario Schifano.5
Halfway down Via del Babuino, Canova Tadolini occupies the studio that Antonio Canova secured in 1818 for his pupil Adamo Tadolini; the family kept it until the late 1960s, and it reopened in 2003 as a café-restaurant inside a museum.6 It is open Monday to Saturday 08:00–23:00 and Sunday from 10:00.
Trevi: the €2 ticket and the streets around it
Since 2 February 2026 visitors who don't live in Rome pay €2 to enter the inner area of the Trevi Fountain; the square itself stays free.7 Ticketed hours are 09:00–22:00, starting at 11:30 on Mondays and Fridays, with last entry at 21:00, and after 22:00 anyone can walk up for free.7
L'antico forno di Piazza Trevi, a bakery at Via delle Muratte 11, and Trevi Cafe on Via della Stamperia are on the lanes leading to the fountain. Elisa, a gelateria and pastry bar at Via di Propaganda 4 near Piazza di Spagna, is open daily 08:00–01:30.
Barberini and getting around
East of Via del Tritone the district climbs to Piazza Barberini. Luna by Faro, the Barberini offshoot of the Via Piave bar, is at Via delle Quattro Fontane 175 and sold its maritozzo for €3.50 in October 2025.8 It opens at 08:00 daily and stays open until 23:00 from Thursday to Sunday. Pepy's bar, on Piazza Barberini, is open daily 07:00–02:00, and Trecaffè on Via dei Due Macelli opens at 06:30.
Line A stops at Flaminio, Spagna and Barberini. Up the hill from Barberini, Via Vittorio Veneto has Gran Café Roma at number 32 and Suggestum Cafe at 14.
