The centro storico has the most cafés open into the evening, ahead of Esquilino and Termini. Sant’Eustachio Il Caffè, Giolitti and Emporio Sant’Eustachio are a few streets apart there, and fewer than half of Rome’s late cafés serve past midnight; the rest close between 22:00 and 00:00.

Plan the trip home before the last coffee. The metro runs until 23:30 from Sunday to Thursday and until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday, and closing can be brought forward during works, with replacement buses.1 On a weeknight, a coffee after 23:30 leaves you without the metro.

Local tip: On a Friday, a last gran caffè at Sant’Eustachio, open until 01:30, still fits before the final metro, which runs until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday nights.1

Sant’Eustachio and the late gran caffè

Sant’Eustachio Il Caffè opened in 1938 on Piazza di Sant’Eustachio, a short walk from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, on a site that was already a one-window shop known as Caffè e Latte in the 1800s.2 It is an old wood-fired roaster, and its Gran Caffè is a blend of secret proportions, served pre-sweetened in a slightly larger cup with a light crema.2

The Ricci brothers have owned it since 1999.3 The bar serves from 07:30 until 01:00 from Sunday to Thursday, 01:30 on Friday and 02:00 on Saturday. Emporio Sant’Eustachio, on Via della Maddalena, closes at 23:00 on weekdays and at midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Gelato bars that double as cafés

Giolitti began as a dairy. Giuseppe and Bernardina Giolitti received a licence in 1890 for a shop on Salita del Grillo that sold milk from their own cows, and in 1930 their grandson Nazzareno opened the shop on Via degli Uffici del Vicario, near Parliament, adding gelato later.4 It opens at 07:00 and closes at 01:30 every day, with Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

Ciampini dates to 1943, when Giuseppe Ciampini opened Bar Tre Scalini in Piazza Navona and created its tartufo gelato; in 1989 the family moved to Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina.5 That café serves from 08:00 to 23:00, Monday to Saturday. Elisa Gelateria Pasticceria Caffè on Via di Propaganda stays open until 01:30 every night, and Canova Tadolini on Via del Babuino until 23:00.

After midnight: Termini, Trastevere and Pigneto

Twins Bar on Via Giovanni Giolitti, about 120 m from Termini, is open from 06:00 to 04:00. In Trastevere, Baylon Cafè on Via di San Francesco a Ripa serves from 06:30 to 02:00 every day, and Bar Gianicolo on Piazzale Aurelio from 06:00 to midnight, Tuesday to Sunday. Bar Rosi on Via del Pigneto stays open until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday, and Caffè Tortuga on Piazza Trasimeno until 02:30.

On Via Merulana, Molino serves until 00:30 every day and Brancaccio Caffè until midnight, Monday to Saturday. Gatsby Cafè on Piazza Vittorio closes at 01:00, or 02:00 on Friday and Saturday, and Pepy’s bar on Piazza Barberini at 02:00.

Night bars that also pour coffee

Some late names are bars in the evening sense. T-Bar Ostiense on Via Ostiense stays open until 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday, Drink Kong on Piazza di San Martino ai Monti opens only at 18:30, and Charro Café on Via di Monte Testaccio runs from 20:30 to 04:00, Thursday to Saturday. In Prati, Duecento Gradi on Piazza del Risorgimento closes at 05:00 on Friday and Saturday, and Romolo on Via della Stazione di San Pietro at 03:00.
