Daimyō (大名) covers 31 ha of Chūō Ward between Tenjin and the old castle grounds. In the Edo period the domain's senior retainers lived here along the inner moat of Fukuoka Castle, and the district takes its name from the term for their rank; traces of the Hikozen and Konya-machi moats survive underground.1 A 1963 renumbering folded older town names, Konya-machi and Karibayashi-machi among them, into Daimyō 1-chōme and 2-chōme.1

Today it is the small-shop side of downtown, with few department stores and many select shops, apparel boutiques, vintage clothing stores, restaurants and izakaya, and it stays busy late into the night.1 Wikivoyage calls it the "new Tenjin".2 Fukuoka's official tourist guide pairs it with Kego and Imaizumi as the neighborhoods to explore for coffee shops, boutiques and small restaurants.3

Local tip: Come to Daimyō late rather than early: apart from Coffee Stand at Seed Village (08:00), Manu Coffee (09:00) and Momentcoffee (10:00 on weekdays), its cafés open at 11:00 or later, and Corduroy Cafe on Teppōchō-dōri serves until 03:00.

Getting to Daimyō

Akasaka Station on the Airport Line is the district's own stop, 0.8 km west of Tenjin Station and 6.6 km from Fukuoka Airport on the same line.14 Most people walk over from Tenjin instead. Tenjin Nishi-dōri marks Daimyō's eastern edge, Taishō-dōri its western one, Shōwa-dōri the north and Kokutai-dōri (Route 202) the south.1

From school ground to Garden City

The district's tallest building stands on its old school ground. Fukuoka Daimyo Garden City, home to The Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka, was built on the site of the former Daimyō Elementary School.1 It was completed in December 2022 at 110.88 m, one of the towers made possible by Tenjin Big Bang, the city program that from 2015 relaxed airport-related height limits around central Tenjin.5

The resident population has turned too: it fell from 3,294 in 2001 to 2,905 in 2018, then recovered to 3,123 by February 2023.1

Where Daimyō's cafés are

Most of the cafés are in 1-chōme, the half nearest Tenjin. Cafe del sol is at 1-14-45, and Marbre Blanc's Konya-dōri branch (マーブルブラン大名紺屋通り店) at 1-11-29. Corduroy Cafe (コーデュロイカフェ) occupies the fourth floor of the 247 Building on Teppōchō-dōri, and Cat and Fish, dot. and Double Coffee are within a couple of lanes of it.

Daimyō 2-chōme, toward Akasaka, has Coffee Stand at Seed Village (コーヒースタンド シードビレッジ) at 2-4-31 and Cafe Yū (Cafeゆう) at 2-38, which serves daily 11:30–19:30. Momentcoffee is near the district's northwest corner. Neko Café Keurig (猫カフェ キューリグ), a cat café on the ground floor of the WATT Building, opens from 15:00 on weekdays and 13:00 at weekends and closes on Tuesdays.

Hours: late starts, later finishes

Coffee Stand at Seed Village is the early one, open 08:00–18:00 Monday to Saturday. Elsewhere mornings start late: Corduroy Cafe opens at 11:00 and Marbre Blanc at 12:00.

Evenings run long, as they do in the bars and clubs around them. Marbre Blanc stays open until midnight every day and Corduroy Cafe until 03:00. Momentcoffee pours until 22:00 on weekdays, closes at 18:00 on Saturday and takes Sunday off.

Corduroy Cafe, on the fourth floor of the 247 Building on Teppōchō-dōri, is open daily 11:00–03:00. Marbre Blanc's Konya-dōri branch at Daimyō 1-11-29 opens 12:00 to midnight every day. Momentcoffee serves until 22:00 on weekdays but closes at 18:00 on Saturdays and all day Sunday.

Why is Fukuoka's Daimyō district called Daimyō?

In the Edo period, senior retainers of the Fukuoka domain lived here along the inner moat of Fukuoka Castle, and the name comes from the term for retainers of that rank. A 1963 renumbering merged older town names such as Konya-machi and Karibayashi-machi into today's Daimyō 1-chōme and 2-chōme.
