Tenjin is Fukuoka's largest shopping district and its de facto downtown.1 It centers on Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and the Nishitetsu Tenjin Express Bus Terminal.2 The district takes its name from Suikyō Tenmangū (水鏡天満宮), a shrine that once stood in neighboring Imaizumi.3

Much of it is being rebuilt. The city launched Tenjin Big Bang in February 2015, relaxing airport-related height limits and floor-area rules across about 80 ha within roughly 500 m of the Tenjin intersection. It first aimed at about 30 rebuilt towers in ten years; by 2021 more than 50 buildings were finished or under way, helped by the National Strategic Special Zone status Fukuoka had won in 2014.4

Local tip: Cross downtown underground when it rains: the Tenjin Chikagai runs about 600 m beneath Watanabe-dōri, from the Tenjin-bashiguchi intersection to Tenjin-Minami Station.6

Getting to Tenjin

Tenjin Station on the Airport Line is 5.8 km from Fukuoka Airport and 2.5 km from Hakata, with Nakasu-Kawabata and Gion in between.5 The Nanakuma Line stops at Tenjin-Minami, and the Tenjin Chikagai underground mall connects the subway and rail stations.2

Under Watanabe-dōri: the Tenjin Chikagai

The mall opened on 10 September 1976 beneath Watanabe-dōri and runs about 600 m, with 153 tenants. It was designed after 19th-century Europe, with cobblestone and brick paving and an arabesque ceiling, and kept dim like a theater so that the shopfronts glow.6 In February 2005 it was extended south to Tenjin-Minami Station when the Nanakuma Line opened. A public-private company, Fukuoka Chikagai Kaihatsu, runs it.6

New towers and a sixth-floor coffee bar

Special approvals now allow towers of roughly 80 to 115 m: Tenjin Business Center, finished in 2021, stands 89.53 m, and ONE FUKUOKA BLDG., finished in December 2024, 96.34 m.4

ONE FUKUOKA BLDG., 19 floors above ground at Tenjin 1-11-1, opened on 24 April 2025.7 Its sixth floor holds SKY LOBBY SQUARE, a co-working space under a double-height ceiling, and a REC Coffee shop next to it.8 The building also holds a hotel and shops and connects directly to Tenjin Station, so the coffee bar can be reached without going outside.8

Shōwa, the live coffee house

Shōwa (照和), in Tenjin 2-chōme, opened in November 1970 as a raibu kissa (ライブ喫茶, a coffee shop with live music). Tulip and Kaientai were its most popular acts in the early 1970s, and Chage and Aska, Kai Band and The Roosters are among the musicians linked to its stage. It closed in 1978, reopened in 1991 and still puts on shows every Friday and Saturday.9

Tenjin's cafés by the hour

CAFÉ FADIE'S opens earliest, at 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, and closes at 17:00. g CAFE runs 10:00–21:00 daily. Bibliothèque (カフェ&ブックス ビブリオテーク), a café with books in the VIORO basement at Tenjin 2-10-3, is open 11:00–23:00.
