Fukuoka households buy coffee by the bag. Over 2023–2025, households of two or more in the city bought 2,977 g of coffee a year, sixth among 52 major Japanese cities and well above the national 2,544 g, yet spent ¥8,167 on it, a little under the national ¥8,389.1 Café Bimi (珈琲美美), a kissaten that Morimitsu Muneo and his wife Mitsuko opened in Imaizumi in 1977, has stood beside Maizuru Park in Akasaka since about 2009.2

Specialty coffee came in through a bean shop: Honey Coffee, a small roaster in a Minami Ward supermarket that Izaki Katsuhide took over in 1996 and steered toward specialty beans from the early 2000s.3 Manu Coffee opened its first bar in Haruyoshi in 2003.4 REC Coffee started as a truck in Yakuin in 2008 and opened by Yakuin Station in 2010; co-founder Iwase Yoshikazu won the Japan Barista Championship in 2014 and 2015 and placed second at the 2016 World Barista Championship.5

Roasting is the city's other claim. Gotō Naoki of Tokado Coffee (豆香洞コーヒー), founded in 2008, won the 2013 World Coffee Roasting Championship.6 The company roasts in Ōnojō, south of the city, and pours at a counter two floors below ground in Hakata Riverain Mall in Kawabata.67 The Way to Coffee, in a guide updated in January 2026, places most of the third-wave shops around Yakuin Station and notes that local drinkers still prefer dark roasts.8

How coffee works in Fukuoka

A plain hot coffee at a table-service kissaten (喫茶店, a traditional coffee shop) cost ¥502 on average in Fukuoka city in 2025, rising from ¥493 in January to ¥508 from June onward. That is about ¥110 less than in Tokyo's 23 wards and ¥64 under Kyoto. A small cup at a self-service chain cost ¥330 in every month of the year.9

At Café Bimi the standard order is the chūmi (中味, "middle flavor"), a blend built on Harar mocha that cost ¥550 in 2019; by 2026 coffees there started at ¥750.210 Morimitsu Mitsuko still brews by nel drip, through a flannel filter, at about 90°C. The beans are washed in 50°C water, dried and rested overnight in newspaper before they go into the roaster, 4 kg at a time.10

Specialty bars price by drink and by bean. REC Coffee's house latte cost ¥650 in 2023.11 In 2021 Coffee County's Fukuoka bar poured hand drip from ¥450; its founder, Mori Takaaki, travels to producing countries to choose the green coffee himself, mostly single origins from Central America.128 At Shirogane Sabō, a pancake house in Shirogane whose blend is roasted by Tokado, a hand drip cost ¥770 in 2023.13

Hours run long at the specialty end: Manu Coffee's Daimyō and Haruyoshi bars are open 09:00–24:00 every day.14 Pay the menu price and leave nothing extra. Japan's national tourism organization lists cafés among the places where tipping is not common.15
