Ōhori Park (大濠公園) is a 39.8 ha prefectural park laid out on a former moat of Fukuoka Castle, which had itself been an inlet called Kusagae. It opened in March 1929 to a design by Honda Seiroku and Nagami Ken'ichi.1 Islands in the central pond are joined by bridges, and the path around the water, 1,921 m, is popular with runners and cyclists.1 The park also has a Japanese garden, a Noh theater and a boathouse, and is a nationally Registered Monument.1

Fukuoka's official tourist guide calls the park an oasis in the heart of the city.2 The castle ruins in Maizuru Park and the Fukuoka Art Museum are next to it.1 Akasaka, on the Tenjin side, holds Café Bimi, a kissaten that has poured nel-drip coffee since 1977.3

Local tip: Walk the 1,921 m loop first and have coffee after: at weekends Park Shop's terrace opens at 08:00, an hour before &LOCALS.78

Café Bimi and nel drip in Akasaka

Café Bimi (珈琲美美) is at Akasaka 2-6-27, at the foot of Maizuru Park. Morimitsu Muneo learned coffee at Mocha (もか) in Tokyo's Kichijōji, opened his own shop in Imaizumi in 1977 with his wife, Mitsuko, and taught himself to roast, since his teachers had not shown him.3 He died in 2016. Mitsuko now brews the nel drip at about 90°C, and the roaster, which takes 4 kg a batch, came from the Kichijōji shop.6

The café opens 12:00–17:00 and bean sales 11:00–18:30. Both close on Mondays, and the café on Tuesdays too. In 2026 coffees started at ¥750 and beans at ¥850 per 100 g.6

Coffee and tea by the pond

Park Shop, in the park's boathouse, sells drinks, bakery items and light meals, with 18 seats inside and 22 on the terrace. It opens at 09:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends and holidays, closing at 19:00, or 18:00 from September to February.7 The park also has a Starbucks.1

&LOCALS runs a kitchen in the park serving set meals and desserts made with Yame tea (八女茶, green tea from Yame in Fukuoka Prefecture) and local ingredients, 09:00–18:30 except Mondays. Its oinari, rice in sweet fried tofu pouches, is sold only here and at its Acros Fukuoka shop. The company opened its first shop, on Keyaki-dōri, in 2018.8

The West Lake story

Guidebooks often say the park copies Hangzhou's West Lake. The 1925 improvement plan referred only to overseas parks in general, though, and prewar guidebooks do not mention West Lake; the claim seems to have appeared in postwar guides.1

Akasaka's other cafés

Press Kitchen Akasaka and Kusukusu are a block apart southeast of the pond. it!, near the park's north end, opens 11:00–20:00 daily. Kto Cafe, on the west side of the water, keeps short hours: 12:00–17:00 on Monday and from Friday to Sunday.
