Almaly district was created on 14 September 1936 as Stalinsky district, became Sovetsky in 1957 and took its present name in 1995; it lies near the site of the medieval town of Almaly or Almatu. At 18.4 km² it is the smallest of Almaty's eight districts, and about 216,000 people lived there in 2019.1

The cafés here lie west of the Golden Square, on long east–west streets such as Tole Bi, Kazybek Bi, Kabanbay Batyr, Zhambyl and Shevchenko, crossed by Seifullin Avenue and Baitursynov Street. Tole Bi alone runs 21.4 km, from the Eastern Bypass to Altyn Orda Street.2

Local tip: For & Milk Coffee at Shevchenko 85, go up to the 11th floor and ring 200 on the intercom.

Apples and old street names

The wild apple Malus sieversii is generally held to have first emerged around Almaty, and the city's name may come from the Kazakh word for apple, though that is disputed.4 Street names here have shifted too: Nauryzbai Batyr Street was once Dzerzhinsky Street, and Gogol Street, which crosses the district, was Shtabnaya until 1909.5

Форт Верный (Fort Verny) at Tole Bi 179a takes its name from Fort Vernoye, the 1854 Russian fort that grew into the city.4

Семейное кафе АндерСон, a family café and pastry shop, is at Zhambyl 60, Тулебайка at Aiteke Bi 53 and Котелок (Kotelok, "the pot") at Nauryzbai Batyr 96. Some cafés hide upstairs: & Milk Coffee is on the 11th floor at Shevchenko 85. Shevchenko Street also has Bubble gum at number 99 and Тайфун (Taifun) at 155A. Solo Cat Cafe is at Kazybek Bi 85, Central Coffee at Shevchenko 94 and Хлеб и пирог (Khleb i pirog, "bread and pie") at Gogol 140.

Getting around

The metro's Almaly and Zhibek Zholy stations are both in the district, which reaches north to Raiymbek Avenue and south to Abay Avenue and borders every other district except Nauryzbay and Turksib.1 Its listed buildings include the house of the Zenkov architects and the former Kazpotrebsoyuz offices.1
