Republic Square opened in 1980 as New Square, was named for Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, reverted in 1988 and took its present name on 23 May 1990.1 The Jeltoqsan (December) protests of 16–19 December 1986 crossed it toward the Communist Party building, now the akimat, and in December 2022 the Tagzym memorial to those killed in the January 2022 unrest was unveiled just south of Satpayev Street.1
South and west of the square the blocks are institutional and full of students. Satbayev University, founded in 1934 as the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute and the oldest technical university in the country, is at Satpayev Street 22, the same address as the Uni Hub café.2
Local tip: Violet on Zein Shashkin Street is open 24 hours, so you can have breakfast there before the metro starts at 06:20.4
