Mexico City still has an all-night café counter. Cafe El Popular, on Avenida 5 de Mayo in the Centro Histórico, was founded in 1948 by Luis Eng Fui and Felicitas Mascareñas and opens 24 hours a day, all year.12 It serves café con leche, natas (the cream skimmed from boiled milk), tamales and enchiladas, at prices Chilango called very economical.1
Most late cafés close at 22:00 or 23:00 rather than after midnight, and Del Valle, Narvarte & Portales and Coyoacán have the most of them, ahead of Juárez & Cuauhtémoc. Plan the ride home around the Metro: on regular days it starts at 05:00 on weekdays, 06:00 on Saturdays and 07:00 on Sundays, and stops at 24:00.7
Local tip: If you plan to ride the Metro home from Coyoacán or the Centro, leave the café by about 23:30, since service stops at 24:00; Cafe El Popular on 5 de Mayo never closes if you miss it.7

Cafés de chinos and café con leche in a glass
El Popular belongs to a type the city calls cafés de chinos, Chinese-run cafés. They arrived in the first half of the 20th century with Chinese immigrant communities and won customers with glass cases full of bread and low prices. Café con leche comes in a glass in two stages, first a coffee concentrate, then hot milk, with pan de chinos: biscuits, pound cakes and pastries modeled on French baking.2
Besides café con leche, El Popular pours hot chocolate and serves breakfasts, soups and tamales.2 In 2025 CDMX Secreta described it serving all day and all night, a few steps from Metro Allende and the Zócalo, with chilaquiles, hot cakes and molletes on the menu and pan de muerto each year.3
Late tables in the Centro and Juárez
Café de Tacuba, at 28 Calle Tacuba, has served since 1912 and stays open daily until 23:30. Chilango's suggested order there is a café con leche with a concha, the shell-topped sweet bun, for chopear (dunking).1 Elsewhere in the Centro, Café de Museo at 85 Avenida Hidalgo opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–23:00, and Casa Barista serves daily 07:00–22:00.
Café La Habana, at 62 Avenida Morelos in Juárez, opens daily 08:00–00:00. Roberto Bolaño took his friends from a UNAM poetry workshop there in 1975 and renamed it Café Quito in The Savage Detectives, and Ara reports that Gabriel García Márquez wrote drafts of One Hundred Years of Solitude at its tables.4 Nearby, Cicatriz on Calle Dinamarca also closes at midnight, and Café Bar Génova on Calle Génova at 23:00.
Coyoacán after dark
El Jarocho draws long queues in Coyoacán and has become a tourist spot.5 Gil Romero and Bertha Paredes founded it in 1953, and the original shop, between Cuauhtémoc and Allende streets, has no chairs or tables: customers drink standing in the street or on curbside benches.5 Besides espresso, cappuccino and americano, Chilango counted about 60 teas and tisanes on the menu in 2017, with doughnuts and tortas to eat.6
La Hija del Jarocho at 163-A Avenida México closes at 22:00. El Mundo del Café has two branches open daily 07:00–23:00, one at 33 Calle Centenario, and Café del Barrio serves until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Jorge Romero, at 1535 Calzada Taxqueña, never closes.
The latest closers elsewhere in the city
East of the center, El Principio Cafe at 4358 Lorenzo Boturini closes at 00:30 every night, one of the latest regular closings outside the 24-hour cafés. In San Ángel, La Victoria at 109 Avenida Miguel Ángel de Quevedo runs daily 06:00–23:30. Pastelnara at 20 Calle Génova in Juárez serves until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Debbie & Peponne at 189 Campos Elíseos in Polanco until 23:00 Monday to Saturday.
Board-game cafés keep evening hours. La Caravana - Juegos de Mesa, at 59 Calle Fresas in Del Valle, opens daily 15:00–22:00, and Avalon, café y juegos de mesa, at 57 Avenida de la Paz in San Ángel, stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
