Henri Prost laid out Hivernage early in the 20th century for Europeans who came to spend the winter in the sun, which is where its name comes from.1 It lies west of the medina, a short walk from both the old city and Guéliz, along wide avenues lined with palms and olive trees, and it holds a large share of Marrakech's luxury hotels, the bigger ones with spas, hammams and a casino.1

To the south are the Menara gardens, laid out around 1157 by the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mu'min: an olive orchard planted on a regular 10 m grid around a reservoir about 195 m long and 160 m wide, with a pavilion completed in 1870.21 The orchard is still mostly olive trees, with some fruit trees and cypresses among them.2

Local tip: Walk the olive groves around the Menara reservoir, then take a coffee at News on Rue Abou Bakr Seddik, open 08:00–00:00.2
