Mouassine and Bab Doukkala make up the western medina between the souks and the Bab Doukkala gate. Both took shape in a Saadian redevelopment: after the city's Jews were moved to a new mellah by the Kasbah, the freed land got a Friday mosque at Bab Doukkala, begun in 1557–58, and another at Mouassine, built between 1562–63 and 1572–73.12

The Mouassine Fountain, beside the mosque, has a drinking trough for animals and a basin for people; it was heavily renovated around 1867, but much of its carved cedar is 16th-century.2 Nearby, Dar el Bacha, built in 1910 as the residence of Thami El Glaoui, became the Musée des Confluences in 2017.3

Local tip: Order an espresso at Simple Specialty Coffee on Rue Dar El Bacha to drink standing, then walk down Rue Mouassine to Le Jardin Secret's café, which opens with the garden at 09:30.46
