The painter Jacques Majorelle bought a four-acre plot here in 1923, commissioned a Cubist villa from the architect Paul Sinoir in 1931, and opened his garden to paying visitors in 1947, after nearly forty years of planting.1 He gave his name to bleu Majorelle, the cobalt he patented, drawn from Marrakech tiles and Berber burnouses.1 Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought and restored it in the 1980s; it now draws more than 700,000 visitors a year, and its blue villa has housed the Berber Museum since 2011.1
Next door, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech opened on 19 October 2017 in a 4,000 m² building by Studio KO, with a research library, an auditorium, a bookstore and a terrace café.2 Away from the garden, the cafés are neighborhood places on Avenue Yacoub El Mansour, Boulevard Abdelkrim El Khattabi and Avenue du 11 Janvier.
