Durbar Marg, informally the King’s Way, is the broad avenue that leads to the Narayanhiti palace. Most of it was built in the Rana era, and today it carries airline offices, banks, hotels and malls, with a statue of King Mahendra in the roundabout at its junction with Jamal.1
The palace at its head was built between 1963 and 1969; after the monarchy was abolished, King Gyanendra left it on 11 June 2008.2 East of it the area runs into Naxal, Kamaladi and Gairidhara, and more of its cafés serve until 22:00 than in any other part of the city.
Local tip: For a coffee after dinner, Coffee Pasal on Durbar Marg and Galaxy cafe on Gairidhara Road both serve until 22:00, later than most of the city.

Narayanhiti, from palace to museum
King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya were among those killed in the royal massacre at Narayanhiti on 1 June 2001.2 When it opened to the public on 26 February 2009, visitors could see the gold-and-silver ceremonial throne, the banquet halls and the former king’s bedrooms; a diamond-and-emerald crown and a Mercedes-Benz that Adolf Hitler gave King Tribhuvan were to follow.3 The palace has been a museum since 2008, and by December 2025 about 4.78 million Nepali and foreign visitors had been through it.4
Durbar Marg is also a junction: from here roads lead to Lazimpat, Thamel, Baluwatar, New Road, Asan, Putali Sadak and Kamaladi.1 The palace grounds lie east of Kaiser Mahal and next to Thamel, so the Garden of Dreams and the Thamel bakeries are a short walk from the avenue.2

Coffee Pasal on Durbar Marg and Galaxy cafe on Gairidhara Road both open 08:00–22:00, and social cafe on Bishnu Marga serves 09:00–22:00; all three have Wi-Fi. Bodhi Books & Bakes on Tangal Marg opens at 10:00 and also closes at 22:00.
Bodhi is a book lover’s café, known for brownies, Nepali tea and a large collection of books.5 RedMud Coffee has two branches in the area; in 2017 its Naxal outlet was the quiet one, with books and magazines, and the menu included a Nepalicano, an Americano with a Nepali twist.6
