Patan, also called Lalitpur, or Yala in Newar, is a city of its own south of the Bagmati and the fourth most populous in Nepal.1 Its royal square was established by the Malla kings, and most of what stands dates from the 1600s, including the Krishna Mandir that King Siddhi Narsingh Malla had built in 1667.2
The old town is organized around bahals, Newar monastery courtyards; Patan has 18 main ones, and the first on most lists is Kwa Bahal, the Golden Temple.3 Several cafés use the same kind of space: a museum garden, a Rana general’s stables and courtyard houses around the square.
