Cafés open late in Kathmandu

Coffee until 22:00 on Durbar Marg and until 23:00 in Thamel and Swayambhu.

For a café here, late usually means 22:00. In 2016 Thamel's restaurants ran until 22:00, while dance bars and live-music venues stayed open to midnight and discos to 02:00.1 In December 2022 the Kathmandu district security committee set the limits at midnight for restaurants, 02:00 for lounges, bars and dohori (दोहोरी, folk-song) restaurants, and 04:00 for clubs.2

Durbar Marg & Naxal has the most cafés open into the evening, ahead of Thamel and Jhamsikhel & Sanepa. Two stay open until 23:00: New Orleans Cafe in Thamel and P.Kathmandu Cafe in Swayambhu.

Local tip: Order food by 21:00: most late cafés here close at 22:00, the same hour Thamel's small businesses were told to shut in September 2025.4

Closing-time rules in Thamel and Durbar Marg

Hours follow security policy, and Thamel's traders have pushed for longer nights for a decade. In January 2016 their council asked for opening hours to 04:00, while police watched 30 newly installed CCTV cameras in the district.1 From Nepali New Year on April 13, 2024, Thamel and Durbar Marg were allowed to stay open around the clock, except around Bhagawanbahal, under rules from the Thamel Tourism Development Council and the district administration.3

That changed after the Gen Z protests of September 8 to 13, 2025.5 Days later the council ordered Thamel's small businesses and liquor shops to close by 22:00, citing rising theft, robbery and night-time brawls.4 The order did not name cafés, so check a café's hours on the day before planning a late visit.

Durbar Marg, Naxal and Tangal

Coffee Pasal on Durbar Marg opens 08:00 to 22:00 daily. It has couches for reading, books to buy or bring, a spiced chai latte and a house hot chocolate.6 Bodhi Books & Bakes on Tangal Marg, a book café that moved from Maharajgunj, keeps 10:00 to 22:00 and serves breakfast and bakery items.6

Galaxy cafe on Gairidhara Road runs 08:00 to 22:00, and social cafe at Bishnu Marga 64 opens 09:00 to 22:00 with indoor seating and Wi-Fi.

Thamel and Swayambhu until 23:00

New Orleans Cafe on Chaksibari Marg opens 07:00 to 23:00. A 2026 piece on Kathmandu's hippie-trail food scene groups it with the Thamel cafés that kept wood-paneled rooms and all-day breakfasts, and says locals value them for reliable Wi-Fi and quiet corners.7 Delicious Cafe at Thahity 17 opens 07:00 to 22:00.

West of the center, P.Kathmandu Cafe on Link Road in Swayambhu opens 07:30 to 23:00, the same closing time as New Orleans and later than any café on Durbar Marg.

Sanepa, Patan, Boudha and Chabahil

In Sanepa, Numa's Cafe at Sanepa Chok opens 10:00 to 22:00 with Wi-Fi. The Lunch Box (द लन्च बक्स) in Bakhundole runs 09:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday, closes on Sunday and takes cash only. In Patan, Ravi Cafe (रवि क्याफे) on the Balkumari–Balkot road has outdoor tables until 22:00.

Evenings at Boudha bring out the butter lamps, which devotees light around the stupa to pray for relatives who have died.8 GCafe on Pasang Lhamu Sadak stays open until 22:00, and in Chabahil, Just Eat runs 07:00 to 22:00 with Wi-Fi.
