Jhamsikhel and Sanepa are in Lalitpur, not Kathmandu: the Bagmati River separates the two cities.1 Jhamsikhel is nicknamed Jhamel, a play on Thamel, and Sanepa, which borders it along with Kupondole, Balkhu and Teku, holds international NGOs, many embassies and the British School.2

In 2010 Nepali Times called Jhamel what Thamel is for tourists, only for Kathmandu’s expatriates, and placed its core on a street up past St. Mary’s that some owners called Restaurant Lane.3 Restaurateurs said serving residents made trade steadier than Thamel’s, which rises and falls with the tourist seasons.3 Several of the early names, New Orleans and Roadhouse among them, were branches of Thamel restaurants.3

Local tip: Café Soma closes early, so plan it as a breakfast or lunch stop rather than an evening coffee.4

Restaurant Lane and the café streets

Kairos Cafe, behind St. Mary’s School, has Wi-Fi and welcomes laptop work. Café Soma is on Pulchowk Jhamsikhel Marga, The Yellow House on Milan Road, Evoke Cafe & Bistro and Sam’s Brew on Jhamel Road, and Sun Cafe & Bar in Jhamsikhel serves brunch and bakes, 08:00–21:00.

Café Soma has long been an expat favorite: it serves coffee, sandwiches and all-day breakfasts, sells books, and works mainly in the daytime, closing early.4 Kar.ma Coffee’s Jhamsikhel café is upstairs in the Moksh complex, above the Pranamaya Yoga studio, and sources fair-trade coffee from the Himalayas.4 Its founder, Birgit Lienhart Gyawali, was born in Austria.5

Roasters and specialty bars

Top of the World Coffee, started by an American in 2007, was one of the first coffee shops in Jhamsikhel, and it adds flavors to its beans during roasting rather than using syrup.6 The beans, sold as Nepali Highland and Peaberry along with flavors such as hazelnut, are grown by Nepal Coffee Company.7 The café at Arun Thapa Murti Chowk has Wi-Fi and power outlets for laptop work, and no smoking inside.

PD Coffee Lab on Kaan Devtasthan Galli is a specialty bar with outdoor seats. Phalano Coffeeghar on Pulchowk Road (08:00–21:00) has Wi-Fi, Rock Beans Coffee on Siddhi Binayak Marg in Sanepa does brunch, and Brewshala, Busy Bean and The Grind Coffee Bar on Milap Road are nearby.

Chains, early starts and late hours

The chains crowd in here. In 2026 Himalayan Java had eight outlets within a single square kilometer of Sanepa, Jhamsikhel and Pulchowk.8 RedMud Coffee, Barista Lavazza, Café Coffee Day and Himalayan Beanz Coffee have branches too.

Daytime hours are the norm. Cafe Hessed opens 08:00–20:00 every day except Saturday, smoke-free and with Wi-Fi; House 5 and Work N Roll keep 08:00–20:00, and Junction Cafe 08:00–19:00. For tea, there are Kathmandu Tea Room and Sally’s Tea Room.

La Pana, an Argentine cafeteria next to KISC in Dhobighat, opens at 07:00 and closes at 18:30. At the other end of the day, Numa’s Cafe at Sanepa Chok serves 10:00–22:00 and The Lunch Box in Bakhundole 09:00–22:00 from Monday to Saturday, cash only. Sunita Dd’s café in Gusingal is open 24 hours.
