Barranco became a district on 26 October 1874 and is small, at 3.33 km² and 37,525 residents in 2023.1 It borders Miraflores to the north and is known as Lima's bohemian quarter, home to many of Peru's leading artists, musicians, designers and photographers.1 The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC), the city's contemporary art museum, is at Avenida Grau 1511.2

Its cafés split between two ends. Around the Puente de los Suspiros are the roaster Tostaduría Bisetti and a run of cafés within 300 m of the bridge; about 1.4 km north, toward Miraflores, a second group gathers on and near Avenida Grau. Barranco's cafés also close later than most in Lima.

Local tip: Time a Barranco walk for late afternoon: Obdulia Emolientera opens at 16:00, and the Puente de los Suspiros' lamps come on at 18:00.

Getting to Barranco

The Metropolitano busway's Barranco stop is Plaza de Flores station, and another Metropolitano route runs along Avenida Francisco Bolognesi.31 Avenida Pedro de Osma, where Tostaduría Bisetti stands, also carries a heritage tram route.1 From the cafés at the northern end of Avenida Grau, the bridge is about 1.4 km south on foot.

The Puente de los Suspiros

Barranco's bridge was inaugurated on 14 February 1876. The wooden footbridge is 44 m long and 3 m wide, and the Bajada de Baños, the path down to the district's beaches, passes 8.5 m beneath it.4 Chilean troops destroyed it in 1881, during the War of the Pacific, and it was rebuilt.1 In 1960 Chabuca Granda dedicated the waltz "El puente de los suspiros" to it, and a monument to her stands beside it.4

In 2026, its 150th year, the bridge closed for six months while the whole wooden deck was replaced, the railings reinforced and the old lamps restored. It reopened with LED lighting that switches on at 18:00.5

Cafés around the bridge

Tostaduría Bisetti, on Avenida Pedro de Osma about 70 m from the bridge, roasts its own coffee: in 2017 El Comercio described beans from San Ignacio, Satipo and Villa Rica, chosen and roasted by the shop's own team of tasters.6 Las Vecinas, at Jirón Domeyer 219, was already counted among Barranco's most traditional cafés that year; it opens 10:00–22:00 on Monday and from Wednesday to Sunday.6

Sagrado Café at Jirón Mariano Melgar 257 and Paz y Espresso at Avenida Grau 184 are also within 300 m of the bridge. Coleccionista, on Prolongación San Martín 144, works as a gallery as much as a café, with murals and art exhibitions.7

Obdulia Emolientera, at Jirón Nicolás de Piérola 136, opens at 16:00 daily and serves until 22:30. Its drink is emoliente, a hot infusion of toasted barley and herbs such as Andean horsetail, flaxseed and alfalfa, with sugar and lemon, traditionally taken in the morning or the evening.8

Avenida Grau and late hours

The northern group starts near the MAC. El Bigote Café y Gofres, a waffle café at Avenida Grau 1460, opens 10:00–22:00 Monday to Saturday. Don Guto Coffee company is at Jirón Juan Fanning 109, and Beso Francés, La Bodega Verde and a Puku Puku are within 300 m.

La Bodega Verde and Puku Puku open at 07:00 every day, the earliest in Barranco, and Puku Puku stays open until 23:00. Tostadora, beside Las Vecinas, is an evening place: Wednesday to Saturday 17:00–23:00 and Sunday 16:00–22:30.
