Santiago de Surco, usually just Surco, was created on 16 December 1929 out of Barranco and took its present name in 1944.1 The name honors Santiago, St. James the Great, and a chiefdom based at Armatambo; the old form was Sulco.1 It had 426,758 residents in 2023, and its northern neighborhoods, Monterrico, Chacarilla and Las Casuarinas, are more affluent than the south.1

Surco has no single café quarter. Its cafés follow the main avenues, and the outlying groups lie about 6 km apart, from the streets off Avenida Javier Prado Este in the north to Jirón Simón Salguero in the south-west. Jockey Plaza, one of Lima's largest shopping centers, is in the district, as are the Universidad de Lima and ESAN.1

Local tip: Pick one cluster: La Nevera Fit and the three cafés on Jirón Cruz del Sur are about 200 m apart off Javier Prado Este, while the Primavera cafés are a separate trip.
