Johannesburg was founded in 1886 on farmland after gold was found on the Witwatersrand, and one of its names, eGoli, means "place of gold".1 The city stands 1,753 m up on the Highveld; from October to April hot days usually break in an afternoon thundershower and a cool evening, while May to September is dry and sunny with cold nights.1
Specialty coffee took its time here. In 2018 the Sunday Times contrasted coffee drinkers who linger in Cape Town and Durban with Joburgers intent on saving time and money, which had made specialty coffee harder to establish. Father Coffee had opened in 2013 in a small space below the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein, and its co-owner Chad Goddard said Joburg was "like London was 10 years ago".2
Roasting has since moved into the suburbs. In August 2021 Father opened in the Kramerville design district and moved its roastery there from Rosebank.3 In 2025 Time Out ranked Linden 17th among the world's coolest neighborhoods, and The Whippet, in Linden's old hotel, was voted onto the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops list.4
Three Gautrain stations sit close to the cafés: Park Station for Braamfontein and the inner city, Rosebank, which opened on 2 August 2011, and Sandton, on the corner of West Street and Rivonia Road.91314

Milk drinks often come in three sizes. The Whippet's June 2026 menu prices a cappuccino at R36 short, R42 tall and R46 grande, with a single-size cortado at R33.5 Next to it sits a red cappuccino, made with rooibos (South African red-bush tea) pulled like espresso; the method was invented by Carl Pretorius, a co-founder of the Red Espresso Company, set up in Cape Town in 2005.56
Rooibos runs through the rest of the menu too. In October 2026 Vovo Telo, a bakery café with branches in Sandton and Morningside, served a rooibos cappuccino, a rooibos chai and a Vietnamese rooibos latte made with condensed milk.7 Plant milks cost extra, R10–12 at The Whippet and R10 at Vovo Telo in 2026.57
Table service is usually tipped at 10% to 15%, sometimes more, though nothing in law requires it and employers must pay the minimum wage whatever staff earn in tips.8 Car guards, many of them unemployed or undocumented, live largely on tips as well.8
The Gautrain links Park Station, Rosebank and Sandton, and the ride from Sandton to O. R. Tambo airport takes 15 minutes.9 For the suburbs off the line, Uber is easy to find.10 For laptop work, Time Out's 2025 coffee guide says Father Coffee's steady Wi-Fi makes it popular with remote workers.11
