Bryanston was first named as an area in 1949 and became a suburb of Sandton in 1969; its large houses once stood in gardens full of trees, and many bigger properties have since become gated communities.1 Rivonia holds Liliesleaf on George Avenue, where police arrested 19 members of the underground on 11 July 1963, leading to the Rivonia Trial.2

Morningside sits beside several arterial roads, Rivonia Road among them, and its Outspan Park is at least 150 years old, a place where travelers once rested their oxen.3 The cafés follow those roads: Vovo Telo at 200 Rivonia Road, Café Sorrento at 333 Rivonia Boulevard, Munch Eatery at 278 Main Road and The Nook in Summit Square on School Road.45

Local tip: On a Saturday, start at Roast Republic on Sloane Street, which opens at 06:30, then reach the organic market on Culross Road when it opens at 09:00.8
