Parkhurst was founded in 1904 by the African Realty Trust, and its name came out of a naming competition that I. W. Schlesinger ran as a publicity stunt.1 4th Avenue is its commercial spine, with restaurants, cafés and décor, design and antique shops, and Time Out calls the suburb Joburg's answer to a European café district.12
On 4th Avenue, 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters is in the Cobbles Centre at the corner of 11th Street, and Bloom Coffee and OBA Cafe share 34 4th Avenue. Greenside has State 5 at 24 Gleneagles Road and happy.me at 127 Greenway Road, and Fingers Crossed is at 2 Levubu Road.
Local tip: CNR Cafe at 56 Buckingham Avenue serves until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday, so it works for coffee after dinner on 4th Avenue.

Parkhurst keeps many historic houses in Edwardian, Tudor Revival and Cape Dutch styles, and its residents' association works to protect the suburb's village-like feel.1 6th Street is the second commercial road after 4th Avenue.1 There are no big hotels in Parkhurst; Time Out suggests boutique stays in Craighall Park and Hyde Park, a couple of minutes' drive away.2
