Linden became a suburb in 1901, on land from Klipfontein, one of the original farms, which had been used to grow fruit; it was laid out so that most streets and avenues form blocks of a similar size.1 Shops, churches and schools line 3rd and 4th avenues, and several street cafés have moved here from Melville in recent years.1 In the 2011 census, 49.7% of residents gave English as their first language and 30.3% Afrikaans.1
The cafés gather on 7th Street and on 3rd and 4th avenues. The Whippet is at 34 7th Street, Bembom at 32 and Fab Diner at 71, and Carbon Cafe is on the corner of 3rd Avenue and 7th Street. Gravity Cafe and Rykies Bistro & Café are at 51 and 65 4th Avenue, and Joon's Coffee Bar Gallery is at 57 3rd Avenue.
Local tip: The Whippet's baristas serve takeaway coffee from 06:30 on weekdays and 07:30 on Saturday, before the tables open; it takes no bookings.6

The Whippet opened in 2012 in the old Linden Hotel, and it builds its look around the suburb's peach-farming past.2 Time Out reports that it was voted onto the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops list in Madrid in 2025.3
Its menu claims that Linden was once the biggest exporter of peaches to the United Kingdom.4 The café's site adds that before Linden became a suburb it was a farming community of peach and cherry orchards, maize, chicken farms and dairies, and that some of the fruit trees still stand in local gardens.5
It takes no reservations because the room is small, and dogs get a biscuit on the house; breakfast is served all day, the café is licensed, and it closes only over December.6 Its beans are roasted by an all-female team.2 The Whippet's site says its Linden branch has a generator and stays fully open when the power goes.6
In Your Pocket singles out Bembom for its freshly baked Portuguese pastries, the pastel de nata (custard tart) above all.7 Fab Diner on 7th Street is a retro gelato spot.3
Yield Coffee Bar opens at 05:45 from Monday to Friday and at 06:30 on Saturday, and on Friday it stays open until 20:30; it has Wi-Fi and outdoor seating. The Whippet's own day starts at 07:00, or 08:00 at weekends.
Time Out ranked Linden 17th among the world's coolest neighborhoods in 2025, one of 39 places considered.3 On 4th Avenue it lists thrift shops such as Chic Mamas and the Junkie Charity Store, and Garden on 4th at number 68, with an "Artists at Work" showcase; Joon's, at 57 3rd Avenue, runs paint-and-sip sessions.3
Home Ground, at 177b Arkansas Avenue in Berario, calls itself a community coffee bar with fast Wi-Fi.8 Dominique's is on Beyers Naudé Drive at Weltevreden Road, LumberJack Café at 161 Beyers Naudé Drive and Bru Coffee Cafe at 6 Montreuil Street.
