Open late cafés in Colombo

Half of the cafés open until 22:00 or later are in Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo 7. The rest are spread along the coast and inland: Duplication Road and Unity Place in Kollupitiya, Galle Road in Bambalapitiya, Mutthaiah Road near Union Place, Havelock Town and Wellawatte.

Evenings are the comfortable time to be out. Daytime highs average 30–32 °C across the year, and the hottest months are March and April.6

Local tip: For an evening-only coffee stop, Bitcoin Cafe by Wheelys on Duplication Road opens at 17:00 and Cafe LaaLaa in Wellawatte at 17:00; the first runs to 01:00, the second to 22:00.

After midnight

Peppermint Cafe, at 76 Wijerama Mawatha, never closes, so it serves the first coffee of the morning as well as the last. Bitcoin Cafe by Wheelys opens only in the evening, 17:00 to 01:00, at 261 R. A. de Mel Mawatha; the street has carried that name for more than 60 years, and although no sign says Duplication Road any more, that is what everyone calls it.3 Peppermint Cafe also has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables.

In Havelock Town, E-Cafe on Sri Sambuddhathva Jayanthi Mawatha runs from 09:00 to midnight and does takeaway.

Until 23:00 and 23:30

Fika Deli, at 50A Mutthaiah Road, opens 07:30–23:30 daily, serves vegan dishes, does takeaway and takes cards, so it covers breakfast and a nightcap. Department of Coffee, on Philip Gunawardena Mawatha, lists its hours as 07:00 to 23:00, long enough for an after-dinner coffee from a specialty bar.1

Coffee and Co, at 37/3 Pedris Road, stays open until 23:00 Monday to Saturday but closes at 19:00 on Sundays, and it does not open until 11:00.2 Both it and Department of Coffee have Wi-Fi.

Until 22:00

A larger group closes at 22:00. In Colombo 7 that means Caramel pumpkin on Ward Place, koffee kulture on Dr C. W. W. Kannangara Mawatha and The brown bean on Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha. Caramel pumpkin is a bakery with brunch and Wi-Fi, and The brown bean has outdoor tables and takes cards. On the coast, Café 1959 at 746 Galle Road opens 08:00–22:00 with an air-conditioned room and vegan options, and Urban Green at 10 Unity Place runs 06:30–22:00.

Cafe LaaLaa, at 60 Boswell Place in Wellawatte, is an evening-only café, open 17:00 to 22:00, and takes cards.

Evenings and Poya days

On weekend evenings, food vendors on Galle Face Green sell crab, prawns and mango slices with pepper and salt, and kite flyers use the green too.5 The green has served as a seafront promenade since 1859.5

Poya, the monthly full-moon holiday, is different: shops and businesses generally close and alcohol and meat may not be sold.4 There are usually 13 Poya days in a year, each a civil and bank holiday, so one falls in almost every month; check a café’s hours before planning a late coffee on one.4 Rain is the other variable: October, the wettest month, averages about 359 mm, and the second monsoon runs from September to November.6
