Enge is a quarter of Kreis 2, on former swampland between the Limmat and the lake, and it joined Zurich with eleven other municipalities in 1893.1 Its Alpenquai shore is one of the 56 Swiss sites in the UNESCO listing of prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps.1 Wollishofen, further south, forms the city's boundary on the left bank and was also merged in 1893.2
Coffee here follows the offices and the parks. Espresso bars line Bleicherweg near Enge station, Quai Café sits on Mythenquai by the lake, and the museum café in the Rieterpark is the reason many people come up the hill.

Museum Rietberg and the Rieterpark
Otto Wesendonck built his villa with the architect Leonhard Zeugheer, the gardener Theodor Froebel laid out the park, and Richard Wagner worked on Tristan there during his Zurich years.3 The Wesendoncks sold the estate to the industrialist Rieter family in 1871, and after a referendum in 1945 the city paid CHF 2.9 million for the villa and 68,000 m² of park.3
The Museum Rietberg opened in it on 24 May 1952, built around Baron von der Heydt's collection, and the underground Smaragd extension of 2007 more than doubled its space.4 Its collections of art from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania make it the largest museum of non-European art in Switzerland.4
The café is in the villa's former winter garden, with tables outside in summer, and the park is open all year.5 In summer it sells picnic baskets for the lawn.6 The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00, until 20:00 on Thursdays, and closes on Mondays.6

Wollishofen is served by tram 7, bus 72 and its own S-Bahn station.2 On its shore at Seestrasse 395 stands the Rote Fabrik, a silk factory of 1892 that squatters and voters saved from demolition; it opened as a cultural center on 25 October 1980 and houses the Ziegel oh Lac restaurant.9 In August the Zürcher Theater Spektakel festival takes over the lakeside.2
