Chiang Mai's north side starts at Khuang Singh junction, about 2 km north of the Old City, where Chang Phueak Road from the city walls continues as Chotana Road (ถนนโชตนา), Highway 107.12 The road took its name on 12 December 1950 from Tim Chotana, a construction supervisor at the Chiang Mai highway office, and it runs north through Mae Rim and Fang to Mae Chan in Chiang Rai province.1
Its cafés sit between Chotana Road and Pa Tan Road (ถนนป่าตัน), out toward the Ping River. They are neighborhood coffee shops for the most part, from one that opens at 06:00 to a few on office hours, plus a roaster whose glass front looks over the river.3
Local tip: Combine the lions with breakfast: Well Coffee Station opens at 07:30 on weekdays, a few minutes' walk from the Khuang Singh monument, and Kapor Indy covers an earlier start from 06:00.

Khuang Singh, the lion junction
The junction is named for the Khuang Singh monument, a pair of white lion statues about 2 m tall that King Kawila had built in 1801 to show Chiang Mai's renewed strength and to ward off further Burmese invasions.2 Armies stopped here for a good-luck ceremony before marching out, and the crossroads came to be called the Auspicious Lion Intersection.2
King Inthawichayanon, who ruled from 1870 to 1897, later had a temple built beside the lions, today's Wat Khwang Singh.2 The Fine Arts Department made the site a national historical site on 8 March 1935, and for the city's 700th anniversary in 1996 it was restored with a new moat and a brick-paved platform.2 Newly appointed governors of Chiang Mai still come to pay respects, and one of the yearly ceremonies for the city's guardian spirits drew more than 300 spirit mediums.2
Getting north from the moat
The direct route is straight up Chang Phueak Road from Chang Phueak Gate, on the north moat, to the lions at Khuang Singh.12 As of 2026, a red songthaew (สองแถว, a shared pickup) costs 30–60฿ a person for a ride within the city, paid when you get off, while Grab, Bolt and InDrive cars run 60–150฿, with Bolt usually 20–30% cheaper than Grab.4
Yellow songthaews also work this side of town, heading north toward Mae Rim.4 App fares rise with surge pricing when it rains, while Bolt's prices tend to hold steadier, so on a wet afternoon compare the apps before booking the ride back.4
Cafés from Chotana Road to Pa Tan Road
On the Chotana side, Rx Cafe and Well Coffee Station are a few minutes' walk north of the lion monument. Well Coffee Station opens 07:30–17:30 on weekdays and 08:00–18:00 at weekends; Rx Cafe has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables. Kapor Indy, a little further east, keeps the longest day on this side of town, 06:00 to 21:30, every day of the week.
Pa Tan Road holds The Baristro Coffee Roaster at number 78, with Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and outdoor seats. The Baristro opened it in 2023 as a riverside branch in a black-toned, wood-furnished "Nordic loft" building with bare cement floors, and stocked it with more than a hundred bean choices roasted by its own team.3 Pals Cafe, a short walk away, has outdoor seating and opens 08:00–17:00, closed on Wednesdays.
When to come north
Most cafés here close between 17:00 and 18:00, so the north side suits a morning or an early afternoon; Kapor Indy is the one to try after dark. At The Baristro Coffee Roaster, the large glass window and the outdoor seats face the Ping, where tour boats pass at sunset.3
Plan around Wednesday if Pals Cafe is the goal, since that is its day off. Chotana Road is also the road out of town toward Mae Rim, so a coffee here can start a day trip north rather than end one.1
