East of the moat, Tha Phae Road (ถนนท่าแพ) runs from Tha Phae Gate toward the Ping river and meets Chang Khlan Road, the spine of the night bazaar. The strip between the Old City and the river holds the bazaar, Warorot market and most of the city's hotels and guesthouses.1

Coffee here keeps shop hours. Most of the area's cafés close by 18:00, before the night market is fully set up, and only Riverside & Wat Ket, the Old City and Nimman have more specialty cafés.

Local tip: Have your coffee before 17:00, when most cafés here close, then walk Tha Phae Road to Chang Khlan Road as the bazaar stalls open at 18:00.

Walking from Tha Phae Gate to the river

Tha Phae means "raft landing".1 A second, outer Tha Phae Gate once stood on the same road near Wat Saen Fang, closer to the river, and was demolished as the city grew; the surviving gate on the moat was originally the inner one.2

From the gate, walk about 750 m along Tha Phae Road and turn right onto Chang Khlan Road for the bazaar, around 15 minutes on foot.1 Warorot market is roughly 1 km from the gate, and it is the most common terminus for songthaews on fixed routes out of town; their color tells you the general direction, with white trucks heading east to San Kamphaeng.1

Warorot market and Thai tea

Warorot, known locally as Kad Luang (กาดหลวง, "big market"), opened in 1910, when Princess Dara Rasmi turned a ground used for the funerals of Chiang Mai's rulers into a market named after Prince Intavaroros, the eighth ruler.3 It is known for northern food such as sai ua (ไส้อั่ว, herb sausage) and nam phrik num (น้ำพริกหนุ่ม, a green chili dip), and its Trok Lao Zhou lane of Chinese and Hmong goods has been called the city's Chinatown.3

Stalls trade 06:00–17:00, selling fabrics, spices, tea and dried fruit, and food vendors fill the street at night.1 The market has a branch of Cha Tra Mue (07:30–17:00), the dominant brand of Thai tea, the base of cha yen (ชาเย็น, iced milk tea).4

The night bazaar after dark

The bazaar occupies Chang Khlan Road between Tha Phae and Sridonchai roads, with stalls trading 18:00–24:00, and it takes in the Anusarn and Kalare markets on the east side of the street.1 It was first owned by Chinese merchants and now has many owners, most of them Thai; handicrafts and portrait painting are its specialties.5 Wikivoyage notes that few Thai shoppers buy there.1

Coffee here is a daytime affair. Cafe de L'Amour, open 08:30–21:00, is one of the few that stay open into the evening.

Where to drink coffee by day

Specialty cafés sit off the main drag: Around 18 Grams at 35 Praisani Road (08:30–17:00), Refine Coffee Roaster on Mueang Samut Road (Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00–17:00), Gateway on Tha Phae Road, and Ma-Chill (08:00–15:00, closed Wednesdays). Bella Goose Coffee, at 169/4 Sridonchai Road, opens at 07:00.

The area's Pangkhon Coffee shares its name with an Akha coffee-growing village in Chiang Rai province whose farms sit between 1,250 and 1,600 m.6
