Central Chiang Rai turns around a gold-painted clock tower on a roundabout in Wiang subdistrict. It was designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist behind the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, as a tribute to the monarchy.1 Every evening at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 it puts on a free light show of about 10 minutes, with colored lighting set to Thai music.21

This is the most mixed café area in the city. Akha Hill and Bechegu roast their own coffee a short walk from the tower, 1055 brewing at corner and Simplify Coffee & Bakery sit on Sanambin Road, and Yoddoi Coffee & Tea serves until 21:00, after the Night Bazaar has opened.3

Local tip: Time a coffee around the light show: Yoddoi Coffee & Tea serves until 21:00 and Sound Brown Coffee until 23:00, so you can sit down after the 19:00 or 20:00 show.

Night Bazaar and the Saturday walking street

The Night Bazaar fills the blocks between the old bus station and Phaholyothin Road from 19:00 to 22:00, with more than 50 food stalls and free music and dance on most nights.4 On Saturdays, Thanalai Road becomes a walking street from 18:00 to 22:00, four blocks long, with the food at its east end.4

Doi Chaang Coffee started as a small shop in Chiang Rai selling the village's own beans before it reached buyers across Thailand and abroad.5 Its busy café stands at the corner of Ratanaket and Phaholyothin roads, by the bazaar.4

Temples near the tower

Wat Phra Kaew, on Trairat Road, is where the Emerald Buddha first appeared. In 1434, lightning struck a chedi at what was then Wat Pa Yia, the Bamboo Forest Monastery, and revealed a stucco-covered Buddha inside; the temple took its present name afterward.64

Wat Klang Wiang dates from 1432 and is one of the town's best examples of Lanna style, though few visitors go in. Wat Phra Singh, near the town hall, once held the Phra Buddha Sihing, a statue now enshrined in Chiang Mai.4

Roasters and cafés around the tower

Akha Hill opens daily 07:00–18:00 and Bechegu 07:30–18:00 from Monday to Saturday; Bechegu is commonly described as costing under 100฿ a person.3 Agape, at 94/4 Ratyotha Road, is a calm room with big windows that pours pour-overs from local beans and sells cakes, capsules and bags of coffee.7

Alio Slow Bar, in an alley near the clock tower, sells only beans from its own farm on Doi Chang.7 On Sanambin Road, 1055 brewing at corner, at number 1055, opens 07:30–17:00 daily with outdoor tables and an air-conditioned room, and Simplify Coffee & Bakery is at 1060/5.

Evenings, heat and smoke

Most cafés here close by 18:00, before the bazaar starts. The exceptions include Sound Brown Coffee, open 08:00–23:00 daily, Yoddoi Coffee & Tea until 21:00, Milk Land until 20:00, and Buzzin Bakery, which opens at noon and stays open until 22:00 from Thursday to Monday.

In late March 2026, smoke from forest fires and farm burning pushed the air quality index in Mueang district to 313, with temperatures near 40 °C, and officials told residents to stay indoors.8 On days like that, pick an air-conditioned room such as Fallen Fruit or 1:2 at Kad Luang, the big market, which opens 08:00–17:00 Monday to Saturday.
