A Swedish bakery by the old bus station

Baan Chivit Mai, opposite the old bus station, belongs to a foundation started by Dan and Eva Olofsson, Swedish missionaries who came to Thailand in 1966. The bakery idea dates from 2001, as a way to fund the foundation's work with orphans affected by HIV/AIDS, and its young staff came from hill-tribe villages and trained in Scandinavian baking.2 The site, in the heart of downtown, was picked to draw Thai customers more than tourists.2

It is Scandinavian in style and pricier than most cafés.3 In October 2025 its Wi-Fi measured 50–100 Mbps, and a quieter air-conditioned room upstairs suits a longer stay.4

Cake with farm coffee

Soyi Pangkhon Coffee House shares its name with the Soyi Coffee Farm in Pang Khon, which has grown arabica under shade for more than 30 years.5 Alexta Coffee, which roasts on site behind glass doors, keeps its food to a short list, mostly croissants.1 Hobby Coffee Brewers, a little out of town, does not roast but rotates beans for its regulars, with South American and African coffees on filter, and is known for its latte art.1

Yoddoi Coffee & Tea, near the clock tower, is the long-hours option among the bakery cafés, open 08:00–21:00 every day, with brunch on the menu as well as cakes.

Where the bakery cafés are

Simplify Coffee & Bakery is at 1060/5 Sanambin Road, near the tower, and Buzzin Bakery opens at 12:00 and stays open until 22:00 from Thursday to Monday. In Rop Wiang, Alpha pastry & cafe at 196/1 Ratyotha Road opens 08:00–16:00 on weekdays, closes on Tuesdays, and stays open until 17:00 at weekends.

By the Kok River, Triple C opens 09:00–17:00 and closes on Wednesdays.

Ordering cake to go

To carry an iced coffee away with a cake box, ask mee toong hue mai (มีถุงหิ้วไหม), "do you have a carry bag?"; a toong hue is the plastic bag with handles that iced drinks travel in.6 Sweetness can be adjusted too: waan noi (หวานน้อย) is a little sweet, and mai waan loei (ไม่หวานเลย) is not sweet at all, though it may still taste slightly sweet.6

Pastry is a morning-to-afternoon affair here. Alpha's weekday baking ends at 16:00 and Triple C closes at 17:00; for cake after dark, Yoddoi serves until 21:00 and Buzzin Bakery until 22:00.
