Rop Wiang (รอบเวียง) means "around the town", and the subdistrict wraps central Chiang Rai on its south, east and west sides. It has 48,930 residents, more than four times the population of Wiang, the subdistrict around the clock tower, and only part of it falls inside the city municipality.1

Its cafés follow the main roads out of the center rather than one street. Two of the city's roasters are here, The Roastery by Roj on Sanambin Road and The Roast on San Khong Luang Road, along with cafés built into car washes and a few that stay open late.

Local tip: Plan roaster visits around closing days: The Roastery by Roj is shut on Mondays and The Roast on Sundays, and both close at 17:00.

Sanambin Road and the third-wave start

The Roastery by Roj is a large wooden shop on Sanambin Road that roasts its own coffee and also buys beans from abroad, with ten or more local coffees, mostly light roasts, for filter and espresso, plus milk drinks, food and bags of beans to take home.2 When the Chiang Rai Times tested it in October 2025, the Wi-Fi ran at 80–150 Mbps, outlets were plentiful and there was no posted time limit.3 It opens at 08:00, Tuesday to Sunday.

22 Grams, also on Sanambin Road in Rop Wiang, is known for punchy espresso made with local coffee that changes with the season.2

San Khong Luang, Ratyotha and Phahonyothin

The Roast, at 124/3 San Khong Luang Road, is the early roaster, opening at 07:00 from Tuesday to Saturday and 07:30 on Mondays, and closing at 17:00. On Ratyotha Road, Alpha pastry & cafe at 196/1 bakes pastries and closes on Tuesdays. James Art Coffee, at 399/1 Na Khai Road, opens at 08:00 on most weekdays.

Palai, a breakfast and brunch café, runs 07:00–14:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. Central Chiang Rai, the shopping mall on Phahonyothin Road, is in Rop Wiang too, with a branch of 1:2 Chiangrai Brew inside.4

Car washes, gardens and late hours

Some cafés out here double as car washes, and the names say so: Kane Car Care & Cafe, open 08:00–23:00 daily, and Loft Loft coffee & car wash in the Ladawan housing estate. 270 Grad Cafe is the other late option, open 10:00–22:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, and Café de Mow runs 08:00–20:00.

MeehPloen Cafe (หมีเพลิน), at 952/7 Ruamjit Thawai Road, has outdoor seating and is open 07:00–17:00 every day. Greenhouse Cafe & Bistro and One Café both keep 09:00–18:00, seven days a week.

Sundays and getting around

On Sundays, San Khong Noi Road, just south-west of the center, hosts the Sankhongnoi walking street, known for its performances and cultural activities.5

Distances out here are longer than in the center. Grab is cheap and convenient, and tuk-tuks and songthaews, shared pickup taxis, cover the main routes.5 The new bus station is 7 km south of the center, and the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, about 13 km out; public buses to the temple leave from the bus station. A songthaew links the new bus station with the old one in about 15 minutes.5
