Sitting outside in Chiang Rai depends on the month. In December and January, days peak around 28 °C and nights drop to about 14–15 °C, and February is the driest month, with about 13 mm of rain.1 By April the average high is nearly 35 °C, and the monsoon runs from late April into October; even April nights average about 21 °C.1
Most of the cafés with outdoor seating are around the clock tower, with one by the Kok River and one in Rop Wiang. They start early: Akha Hill and MeehPloen Cafe open at 07:00, 1055 brewing at corner at 07:30 and Bundarnjai by the river at 09:00.
Local tip: Between December and February, take the first hour: Akha Hill and MeehPloen Cafe open at 07:00, while the night's cool still holds.
Where these cafés are: Clock Tower & Night Bazaar (5), Kok River & Rim Kok (1), Rop Wiang (1).

The Kok flows east out of Myanmar along the north side of the city and joins the Mekong about 40 km to the north-east.1 It is 130 km long, and longtail boat cruises leave from town.2 Bundarnjai, at 353/2 Rim Nam Kok Road, serves coffee, food and bingsu at outdoor tables from 09:00 to 18:00.
About 4 km west of the center, the riverside strip known as Chiang Rai Beach has around 20 cafés and restaurants overlooking the water, mostly without English menus; you need a tuk-tuk or a motorbike to get there.2
บุหงา ตานี Cafe' & Bistro, at 162 Banphaprakan Road, has outdoor tables and Wi-Fi and opens 10:00–19:00 from Monday to Saturday. Agape, at 94/4 Ratyotha Road, has seating outside as well as a bright room with big windows, and its pour-overs use local beans; the calm room suits a book.3
Akha Hill, open 07:00–18:00 daily, and 1055 brewing at corner on Sanambin Road both pair outdoor tables with an air-conditioned room, a useful fallback when the afternoon heat builds.
Fire detections across northern Thailand multiply through February and March, peak in March and fade by May with the rains.4 Chiang Rai's smoke comes from local forest fires, land clearing and farm burning, and drifts in from Myanmar and Laos.5
On 27 March 2026 the AQI reached 313 in Mueang district, with temperatures near 40 °C, and officials advised N95 masks outdoors and closed windows at home. In those weeks, check a real-time air-quality app before you choose a terrace.5
August is the wettest month of the monsoon, at about 373 mm, so an umbrella or a roofed terrace earns its place from late April onward.1 Outdoor tables are most comfortable early: MeehPloen Cafe on Ruamjit Thawai Road in Rop Wiang opens at 07:00 and closes at 17:00, and most of the others close by 18:00 or 19:00.
For an evening outdoors, follow the markets instead: the Saturday walking street on Thanalai Road runs from 18:00 and the Night Bazaar from 19:00, both until 22:00. On Thanalai Road the food stalls gather at the east end of its four blocks.2
