Austin, the capital of Texas, sits on the Colorado River where it widens into Lady Bird Lake, and Congress Avenue runs from the river up to the State Capitol.1 The University of Texas had 53,864 students in fall 2024.2 The city's unofficial slogan, Keep Austin Weird, started as a call to protect small, local businesses from being overrun by large corporations.1
Some of the coffee businesses go back decades. Mozart's Coffee Roasters has roasted in-house on the shore of Lake Austin since 1993.3 Texas Coffee Traders opened in 1994 and roasted in the heart of East Austin for nearly 30 years before moving its roastery to Wilcab Road in 2024.4 Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors, opened in Central East Austin in 2014 by the baristas Ryan Hall and Kathleen Carmichael, began roasting its own beans three years later.5
Newer cafés carry their owners' backgrounds onto the menu. Lau Lau on Guadalupe Street calls itself a specialty coffee shop rooted in Asian American culture, named for the owner's Chinese American family.6 Đậm Coffee Bar near ACC Highland specializes in phin coffee, brewed through the small Vietnamese drip filter, and pours a slow-dripped cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk).7 Haraz Coffee House, a Yemeni chain born in Dearborn, Michigan, opened in Austin in 2025.8
Interstate 35 follows the old East Avenue, which the 1928 city plan made the western edge of a segregated district; East Austin grew up beyond it.21 North of the river, Guadalupe Street runs past the university's western edge as the Drag and on to Hyde Park, which it borders on the west.2223
