The University of Texas at Austin opened on September 15, 1883. Its Main Building tower, finished in 1937, stands 307 feet (94 m).1 The Drag is the stretch of Guadalupe Street along the western edge of the campus, with the West Campus neighborhood beyond it.2

Its occupants have included the University Co-op, Dobie Mall and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, and Captain Quackenbush's Intergalactic Espresso and Dessert Company once served coffee there. A 1993 mural of Daniel Johnston's “Hi, How Are You” album cover stands near the south end of the Drag; the building it was painted on was demolished in 2024, but the mural was kept.2

Local tip: Weekend coffee on campus is limited: Union Coffee House on Whitis Avenue opens 12:00–17:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and Tapioca House on the Drag serves until 23:00 every day.

Changes coming to Guadalupe

A city corridor project would cut Guadalupe Street from four travel lanes to three, adding two dedicated transit lanes and two continuous bike lanes and saving CapMetro buses up to three minutes through the corridor. A future CapMetro Rail Orange Line could remove private cars from the Drag entirely.2
