Hyde Park dates from 1891 and is considered Austin's first suburb. Monroe M. Shipe developed it as a streetcar suburb with a large artificial lake and marketed it as “White Only”. It runs from 38th Street north to 45th and from Guadalupe Street east to Duval Street, and bungalows are its most common houses. The neighborhood sits just north of the University of Texas.1

Part of the neighborhood was listed as a National Register historic district in 1990. The sculptor Elisabet Ney built her castle-style studio, Formosa, in the northwest corner; it is now the Elisabet Ney Museum. Shipe Park, with a pool and tennis courts, was dedicated in 1928, and the neighborhood borders Hancock and North Loop. Single-family houses make up about 95 percent of the buildings, many of them renovated bungalows painted bright colors.1

Local tip: Lau Lau closes on Tuesdays; on that day, Civil Goat Coffee at 3423 Guadalupe opens at 08:00 and has outdoor tables.2
