Bình Thạnh fills the bend of the Saigon River north of District 1, with the river as its eastern border and the Thanh Đa peninsula, home to Bình Quới tourist village, at its northern end.1 It became a district in 1976, out of land taken from Gò Vấp.1 Since July 2025 its territory has been five wards: Gia Định, Bình Thạnh, Bình Lợi Trung, Thạnh Mỹ Tây and Bình Quới.8

Time Out ranked it the world's 32nd coolest neighborhood in 2020, noting that Saigon's street-side coffee shares space here with higher-end places.5 That mix shows in the river towers around Landmark 81, the roasters on Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh and the run of all-night cafés inland.

Local tip: Ride Metro Line 1 to Văn Thánh Park for the riverside cafés, or take the Waterbus to Thanh Đa, where Morning Coffee opens at 06:00.67

Getting to Bình Thạnh

After Ba Son, Metro Line 1 runs through Bình Thạnh, with stations at Văn Thánh Park, in Thạnh Mỹ Tây ward, and Tân Cảng; cashless single tickets cost 6,000–19,000₫.6 The Saigon Waterbus also calls at Thanh Đa, on the peninsula, now part of Bình Quới ward; a one-way ticket cost 15,000₫ in December 2025.7

Landmark 81 and the riverside

Landmark 81, at 720A Điện Biên Phủ in Thạnh Mỹ Tây ward, is 461 m tall with 81 floors, and its SkyView observation deck on floors 79 to 81 opened on 28 April 2019.4 Nearby, Time Out sent visitors to the Văn Thánh tourist site on Điện Biên Phủ for a green morning.5

Bà Chiểu and the tomb of Lê Văn Duyệt

Inland, the new Gia Định ward merges the old wards 1, 2, 7 and 17 and holds Bà Chiểu market and the tomb of Lê Văn Duyệt.2 Duyệt was a general who helped Nguyễn Ánh put down the Tây Sơn rebellion. Emperor Minh Mạng had his tomb desecrated, Thiệu Trị restored it, and it was enlarged in 1937 and renovated in 2008; locals call it Lăng Ông Bà Chiểu.3

Lê Văn Duyệt, the avenue named after him, has Hatvala - Tea Shop at 2A (08:00–18:00), and Lạc Teahouse is in an alley off Đinh Bộ Lĩnh.
