A good part of Saigon's social life happens after dark. In the rainy season, May to November, the afternoon storm usually breaks around 15:00 or 16:00 and is over within an hour.1 The city's best-known nightlife is in District 1, where Bùi Viện, a 652 m street of small bars and beer gardens, runs from Trần Hưng Đạo to Cống Quỳnh.2

Counting the 24-hour places, District 1 has the most cafés serving until 22:00 or later at least one day a week, with Phú Nhuận second and Bình Thạnh, District 3 and District 7 next. Among the cafés that do close, 22:00 is by far the most common time, and only Le Café des Stagiaires in Thảo Điền stays open past midnight, until 01:00 on Thursdays and 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Local tip: On weekend nights Bùi Viện closes to traffic from 19:00, so get dropped at the Trần Hưng Đạo or Cống Quỳnh end and walk in; Cà Phê Bookworm on Đỗ Quang Đẩu serves until 23:30.

Around Bùi Viện and Nguyễn Huệ

Bùi Viện opened as the city's second walking street, after Nguyễn Huệ, on 20 August 2017, and vehicles are kept out on weekend nights from 19:00 until 02:00.2 The first pedestrian stretch ran between Trần Hưng Đạo and Đỗ Quang Đẩu.3 Cà Phê Bookworm, at 4 Đỗ Quang Đẩu, stays open until 23:30, and Đảo Space at 137/2 Cống Quỳnh until 22:30. Cà Phê Snob, at 147A Trần Hưng Đạo, never closes.

Vietnam approved a national night-time economy scheme in July 2020, and a 2023 policy article in Tạp chí Ngân hàng reported restaurant takings on Bùi Viện of nearly 3 billion to about 8 billion₫ a day.4 On Nguyễn Huệ itself, Cà Phê Ciao at 74-76 serves until 23:00, and Sova Café on Tôn Thất Đạm opens at 11:00 and closes at 23:00.

Phú Nhuận after dark

On the evening of 26 January 2024, Phú Nhuận opened Phan Xích Long and its side streets toward the Rạch Miễu residential area as a food street, with the stated aim of developing the night economy.5 Cà Phê Đô Hội, at 65 Phan Xích Long, is open around the clock.

Several late cafés are in the streets around it. Thành Coffee at 1 Nhiêu Tứ stays open until midnight, Hannah's Kitchen VN in an alley at 53 Nhiêu Tứ until 23:30 and Cafe Lafam at 199 Hoa Lan until 22:30. Elsewhere in Phú Nhuận, Tĩnh Books and Coffee, off Lê Văn Sỹ, serves until 22:00.

The park and the pavement at night

The cheapest night out is on the grass. Vietnam Coracle described hundreds of 16- to 24-year-olds gathering in Reunification Park, the green strip between Reunification Palace and Notre-Dame Cathedral, from sunset until late at night.6 Vendors sold iced robusta, tapioca pearl tea and snacks such as grilled squid, with not a drop of alcohol in sight.6 Park rules forbid sitting on the grass, and police occasionally ride through to break the gatherings up.6

Cà Phê Au Parc, at 32 Hàn Thuyên a short walk from the park, stays open until 22:30 from Monday to Saturday but closes at 17:00 on Sundays. Cà Phê F.r.i.e.n.d.s, in an alley off Thủ Khoa Huân, serves until midnight.

Night-only cafés and the latest closers

A few cafés keep night hours by design. Cà Phê Gao Trần at 20 Lương Nhữ Học in District 5 opens only from 19:00 to midnight, and Kafka Café in Đa Kao & Tân Định breaks from 15:00 to 17:00 before an evening session until 22:00. Cà Phê Điện in Tân Bình also serves until 00:00.

Away from the center, 23:00 is a common closing time: Mako Coffee on Vành Đai Trong in Tân Phú, MossCoffee on Dân Chủ in Thủ Đức, Zerus Caffe on Bến Bình Đông in District 8 and Neo Cafe at 635 Điện Biên Phủ in Bình Thạnh all close then. After midnight, the 24-hour cafés are nearly all that is left.
