Đa Kao and Tân Định are the old residential wards at the top of District 1, where the streets run up to the Nhiêu Lộc–Thị Nghè canal.6 Since July 2025 most of the area has been the new Tân Định ward, which joined all of old Tân Định with part of Đa Kao; the rest of Đa Kao went to Sài Gòn ward.12 Both old names are still used, and the neighborhoods kept their character.7

The quarter has its own market, a pink church just over the ward line and a pagoda from 1909, and its cafés are smaller than downtown's. Several roast their own coffee: 80+ Coffee Roastery on Trần Nhật Duật and 96B cafe & roastery on Phan Ngữ say so in their names.

Local tip: Do the market and the pink church on one walk, since they face each other across the road, and finish with a coffee on Trần Nhật Duật.34

Tân Định market and the pink church

Tân Định market, at 1 Nguyễn Hữu Cầu, began as the marché de Phu-Hoa, one of the main markets of northern Saigon in the 1870s and 1880s.3 Early in 1926 the colonial authorities voted 110,000 piastres to rebuild it, and the new hall opened on 26 July 1927; the original roof is gone, but the facade has survived.3

Across the road, Tân Định Church was built between 1870 and 1876 and is painted pink inside and out.4 Its address, 289 Hai Bà Trưng, now falls in Xuân Hòa ward rather than Tân Định.1

The Jade Emperor Pagoda and the canal

The Jade Emperor Pagoda at 73 Mai Thị Lựu was completed in 1909 by a Cantonese merchant and has carried the Buddhist name Phước Hải Tự since 1984; Barack Obama visited it on 22 May 2016.5 Along with the market and the pagoda, the new ward counts Lê Văn Tám park and the Đa Kao roundabout, with its clock tower, among its landmarks.1

To the north, the Nhiêu Lộc–Thị Nghè canal runs for almost 9 km and was rebuilt between 2002 and 2012, with Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa roads along its two banks.6 Cà Phê Lisa (268 Hoàng Sa) and MIA CAFÉ (375 Hoàng Sa) sit on the canal road.
