An Bàng is Hội An's main beach: about 4 km of yellow sand east of town, where fishermen still launch round bamboo basket boats and the Cù Lao Chàm islands sit on the horizon.1 Cửa Đại, whose name means "great estuary", is about 2 km further south.2 Both are an easy ride from the Old Town, and the coast between them has been losing sand to the sea since 2000.3

The cafés out here are spread between Âu Cơ street near An Bàng and Cửa Đại road, and they keep beach hours: Sound of Silence and Cosy Corner open at 07:00, and Mate, on Âu Cơ, is one of the few that stays open past 19:00. Come for breakfast and the first swim, not for a late night.

Local tip: Ride out for sunrise, around 05:15 in June, then have coffee at Sound of Silence or Cosy Corner, both open from 07:00.

Getting from the Old Town to An Bàng and Cửa Đại

Published distances from the Old Town to An Bàng range from 3 to 5 km, depending on where you start.12 By bicycle it takes 25–30 minutes on roads that are mostly flat, and rental bikes cost 40,000–60,000₫ a day as of 2026, though many hotels lend them free.2

A taxi from the Old Town to either beach costs about 80,000–120,000₫ each way as of 2026.28 Cửa Đại is roughly 2 km south of An Bàng, so on a bicycle the two beaches make one loop of a morning.

What erosion has done to Hội An's beaches

Cửa Đại has been eroding since 2000, and in places the shoreline has moved about 100 m inland. Concrete embankments, sandbag walls and geotubes built from 2010 to 2015 cost more than 140 billion₫ and did not stop it; later underground dykes and pumped sand restored part of the beach, while a stretch of more than a kilometer toward An Bàng kept eroding.3

Storms in late 2025 undid some of that work. In early November high tides broke temporary embankments at Cửa Đại and cut the beach back by 3–5 m, and more than 3 km of the coast at Tân Thành, mostly along Nguyễn Phan Vinh street, was badly eroded.4 A €42 million program of breakwaters and sand replenishment along the coast is scheduled to run until the end of 2026.3

Beach cafés from Âu Cơ to Cửa Đại road

Sound of Silence is open 07:00–19:00 with Wi-Fi, and Cosy Corner 07:00–17:00. Mate Restaurant and Coffee on Âu Cơ runs longest, 08:30–21:30, with a bakery counter, brunch and vegan dishes.

Hoi An Roastary, a specialty roaster, is on Nguyễn Phan Vinh, the street named in the late-2025 erosion reports. Thuc Quyen Coffee at 129 Cửa Đại has Wi-Fi and a brunch menu. Ask about hours at either before you ride out.

When to go to the beach

An Bàng and Cửa Đại are at their best from May to July, before the wet season, which runs from September into January with river floods peaking in October and November.5 Mornings on the beach are quiet, and the midday sun is best avoided.7

The beach faces east, so the morning is also when the light is best. In 2026 the sun rose at 05:14 in mid-June and at 06:05 in mid-December.6 Northeast monsoon waves and high tides are what keep wearing the shore away.4
