Both barrios take their names from Jesuit farmland. Chacarita comes from an old word for a small farm, and its land passed to the Crown after the Jesuits were expelled in 1767; Colegiales was once Chacarita de los Colegiales, where the order brought its students on retreat.12 Colegiales is mostly residential, with houses of up to three stories and taller buildings toward Avenida Cabildo.2

Sprudge's 2025 guide names Chacarita and Colegiales, with Palermo and Villa Crespo, as the districts for specialty coffee.3 The barrios also keep three bares notables: Bar Conde, Ocho Esquinas at Avenida Forest 1186, and the Museo Fotográfico Simik on Avenida Federico Lacroze.4

Local tip: Café Palacio's photo exhibitions open on the first Wednesday of each month, and you can walk in to see the camera collection without ordering.
