Palermo Hollywood is an informal name for a sector of Palermo, not one of the city's 48 official barrios.1 It takes the name from the TV production companies, broadcasters and film and TV post-production houses that gathered here.1 It lies beyond the Arroyo Maldonado, the stream that now runs in a culvert under Avenida Juan B. Justo, on land that once belonged to the Partido de Belgrano.12
Restaurants by young chefs followed the studios.1 The area's institutional landmark is the century-old Club Atlético Palermo, and older residents still call it Quinta Bollini.1 The cafés concentrate on a handful of streets: Humboldt, Fitz Roy, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Bonpland, with Cuervo and Café Registrado a block apart on Costa Rica.
Local tip: At Montecarlo, order the big coffee, a cup of almost half a liter, with the budín de pan (bread pudding) made from the bar's old house recipe.
Nothing matches those filters here. See all cafés in Buenos Aires.
Line D's Palermo and Ministro Carranza stations are the closest subte stops; the line was extended to Ministro Carranza in 1993.3 Four commuter rail lines cross Palermo, with five stations in the barrio, and the Metrobus Juan B. Justo has a Palermo stop near the start of its route at Puente Pacífico.45
LAB Tostadores, on Humboldt, roasts its own beans, makes its own chocolate and runs coffee courses, with seating along a single bar.6 It opens 08:00–20:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 on Saturdays. Cuervo, which Time Out describes as a pioneer of specialty coffee in the city, has a branch at Costa Rica 5801, open Tuesday to Sunday 08:00–20:00.6
A block on, Café Registrado (Costa Rica 5901) opens daily 08:00–20:00, and Cofi Jaus has a branch at Humboldt 1793. Siembra, at Humboldt 1906, and Von Berry Coffee Club, at Fitz Roy 2192, open daily from 08:00.
Malcriada is known for cheesecakes, giant alfajores and oversized cookies, and Time Out warns of lines.6 Cuadra, a bakery known for laminated pastries, breads and cold brew with lemon syrup, has its restaurant at Concepción Arenal 2629.6 It stays open until 00:00 on Monday and from Wednesday to Saturday.
Bonpland has the most cafés of any street here, among them Craft Vegan Bakery, Elocuente Cafe y Libros and Le Bon George. Pani, at Nicaragua 6044, opens daily 09:00–21:00, and Malcriada Café on Bonpland opens at 09:00 from Tuesday to Friday.
Montecarlo, on the corner of Ravignani and Paraguay, opened in 1922 and is on the city's catalog of bares notables.78 The story goes that Ernesto Guevara planned some of his motorcycle trips through Latin America there.7 It closed during the 2020 pandemic and reopened, remodeled, in the spring of 2021, keeping its checkerboard floor and the original iron doors of 1922.7
Its coffee cups hold almost half a liter, which the bar counts among the largest in the city, and the house cocktail, the Montecarlo, mixes gin, Hesperidina, grenadine and lemon juice.7 The tourism office gives its hours as 08:30–00:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00–17:00 on Sunday.7
