Alexandria, south of the CBD, is named like neighboring Waterloo for a British victory over Napoleon, in its case the Battle of Alexandria.1 By 1943 it was the largest industrial district in Australia, nicknamed the "Birmingham of Australia", with 550 factories on about 1,000 acres. Terraces were cleared for light industry and warehousing, which still fill much of the suburb.1
To the east, Green Square is one of Australia's largest urban renewal projects, covering 278 hectares where Alexandria, Zetland, Waterloo and Beaconsfield meet, about 3.5 km from the CBD.3 Most cafés in the area open on Saturdays and Sundays as well; Eat Me Espresso Bar, Allpress Espresso and Café Imparo on Bowden Street are among the few that keep to weekdays.
Local tip: For coffee before 07:00 at weekends, The Coffee Roaster on Botany Road and Social Society on Ebsworth Street both open at 06:00 on Saturdays and Sundays; The Grounds of Alexandria opens at 07:30.
